She was there, in all her beauty, standing next to the lake on the Hogwarts grounds.
He walked closer, then ran; he longed to reach her, to hold her in his arms, to reassure himself that she was real and present and solid.
But no matter how fast he went, he always seemed to get farther and farther away.
She flew farther and farther away.
He screamed her name to the heavens and called after her. "Come back!" he cried desperately, "Come back!"
But his voice was lost to the wind, carried away from her ears and her knowledge.
She disappeared completely.
The rain came and poured down on the lush green grass, joining the tears flowing from his face. If it had been difficult for him to leave her the first time, it was heart-breaking for him to never reach her again.
He turned back to the castle in the rain, examining the brickwork while the rain soaked his robes and continued to pour, reminiscent of the regrets he felt. How he had wronged her, how he had left her, how he had thrown her aside to simply do his duty (he thought).
A castle where they had spent hours, some of them together, many of them apart. Neither of them had expressed their wish of a deeper relationship until later. He wondered now if, had he told her his feelings earlier, he wouldn't have felt the need to leave; he wouldn't have pushed her away from him. They could have had months, years, eons to spend together. And now he felt as though he could never be with her again. Not only did fate seem determined to keep them apart, but life in general and the simple truth of their existences were hindrances to their romance, to their time together.
And he glimpsed her face once more, as if from behind a veil, only for it to disappear as he awoke, the constant longing in his chest strong and fierce in the dark of the night, so strong he was certain it would never cease.
I can imagine this with many different pairings, though namely HP/GW, SS/LE and RW/HG. I purposefully made it general, which, I think, makes it all the more meaningful. Use any pairing that you feel works well. I'll leave it up to your imagination.
