Walking through the waiting room I felt my eyes pull to him, his shoulders slumped and worry pouring. I know my heart is stone, but in the face of such torment I felt it clench in sympathy. A quick prayer for him and whoever he was waiting for, I hurried through to meet the one I had been waiting days to see.
Our moments together were short before duty called again, though both of us left lighter from our brief embrace, our connection strengthened.
She entered the waiting room just ahead of me nearly bouncing. Still waiting, he looked up and concern melted away as he took her in. She flew to him and had my hearing been that of a human I would have missed the quiet whisper, "It's okay. I'm okay. It's…well, there's a baby."
My stone heart clenched again, this time in agony, for a phrase I would never get to say again. Turning the corner I caught one last glimpse, the woman wrapped around the man, the man anchored to the woman, and my heart eased. I would go home and love the ones I had, frozen neither young nor old. They needed me still.
Author's note: My very first stab at Fanfiction. I've been inspired by the challenge at fan fic flash fic because of Bedelia Jane and thought I'd try my hand. Finally.
