She rolled over, rested her head on his chest and felt the beat of his heart against her cheek. 'He's alive…He's alive..He's still alive…'
A lot had happened since the incident with the submarine had occurred and Kate thought Mike had died, Mike was once again relieved of his place as Captain on the Hammersley and Kate finally got her promotion. Mike moved in and they announced their relationship to the crew, although none of them were terribly surprised…
But there was one thing that Kate would never get out of her mind, the image of that sub blowing up, the sudden feeling of emptiness and the pit that lay in the bottom of her stomach when she thought the love of her life had died… None of those things truly went away, for brief periods of time she'd forget, and then he'd walk out the door of the house and the realization that there was even a tiny possibility he wouldn't come back was almost too much for her to bare.
But in moments like these, when she's lying against his warm body, just for a moment, there's no feeling of emptiness, no pit, no painful memories… There's just the two of them, together, in the present, the happy present, alive.
He wraps his arms around her and pulls her close, she hears his breathe in her ear. 'He's alive… He's alive… He's still alive…'
