She had just come out of the nursery. Even though Michael was a wonderful husband, he went a little overboard when he figured out that he was going to have a son. Still, Alyssa Harris couldn't have been more in love with Michael or more happy about motherhood. Even if the bright blue paint and colorful sports posters did make her eyes hurt and her head ache.
Walking downstairs, all Alyssa wanted to do was rest. Her favorite soap opera was on and dinner wasn't for another four hours. Collasping onto the couch, Alyssa was soon greeted by the family dog: a doberman named Specs. He hopped onto the couch next to her and laid his head ontop of her lap.
"Good boy." Alyssa said.
Just as the TV clicked on, there was a knock on the door. Alyssa mumbled a few swear words and then went to answer the door. All it took was a single shot to the forehead.
AN HOUR LATER...
Horatio Caine ducked under the yellow tape that was plastered at the doorway of the Harris home. He looked down at the corpse of Alyssa Harris, a beautiful red head in her thirties, whose skin had begun to pale and whose vacant eyes were wide in surprise. On the couch, was a dark-skinned fellow with red circles under his eyes and tears running down his face.
"He's the husband."
Horatio drew his attention to Alexx, the medical examiner who had just knelt next to Alyssa's corpse.
"Interracial marriage? I just hope we're not looking at some random hate crime."
"I doubt it. Mr. Harris says that this is a good neighborhood, with the best neighbors you could ask for."
Horatio shoved his hands in his pockets. "Yeah, there would be some kind of message to. So, why were you called in?"
"Vic is pregnant."
Horatio looked down at Alyssa's stomach, and quickly noticed the swollen baby bump. Alexx carefully pulled up the maternity sweater. Along Alyssa's abdomen was a long, clean line of stitches.
"Alexx, I'm no doctor but aren't those stitches from a C-section?"
"They are, but Michael just said that Alyssa still had five weeks before the baby came."
"I'll see what I can find out. You better get her to the morgue."
Alexx nodded in agreement and began to bag up the body. Horatio went over to Michael and sat next to him.
"I know it's a tough time. Losing your wife is never easy...I just need to ask you a few questions."
Michael sniffled and used his sleeve to wipe his nose. "I-I don't understand who would do this to her. She was the nicest person in the world. No enemies."
"I'm sure that she was."
"My daughter. I have to pick up Carol at daycare."
"Relax, relax. I'll have one of my people bring her home."
Michael nodded slowly. "I suppose that's okay."
"Now, I have something to tell you. Alyssa had a caseran section done recently."
"She delivered without me? I was sure that I'd be back in time. My plane landed in Miami a few hours ago. I'm an ad exectuive and had a marketing campaign in Tokyo. I've got to find my son."
"I'm sure that he's safe and sound upstairs."
At that moment, Eric Delko, a fellow CSI investigator and Horatio's brother-in-law came rushing downstairs.
"H, we have a problem. Alexx told me before she left to go and see if the baby was safe."
"Well?"
"The baby wasn't there, Horatio. The baby's gone."
