Dedicated to Fawkes-the-Golden-Bird for the idea, go find her.
It was March of their seventh year when James got around to telling Lily that he was an illegal animagus. It hadn't upset her, she only thought it was rather interesting, dangerous, but interesting nonetheless.
On a chilly day in May, Lily finally asked James to show her. "Can I just see what it looks like?" She asked pulling on a jumper.
"Alright," He had shrugged and took her onto the empty grounds. Then he changed, it was the most mesmerizing thing she had ever seen. His body rippled and suddenly he was a stag. She blinked in surprise, it had all happened so quickly, the transformation.
One of his antlers prodded her and she kneeled down, at eyelevel. It was hard to believe this was the same James who had held and kissed her earlier, but she had seen him change with her own eyes. It felt magical, even by wizarding standards.
The he began to speed into the forest and she had to jog just to keep up. Somewhere along the way, she lost him. Lily knew she ought not to be in the forbidden forest by herself, but it was James, he would find her.
She tripped quite a few times and she knew her elbows were scraped under her jumper, if she didn't find James she would lose it. Then she entered a clearing and found him. With a doe.
She took a step closer to make sure it was really James. The stag had the same twinkling hazel eyes that belonged to James, she was sure it was him.
The stag dipped his head and the doe leaned her head onto his antlers, Lily felt herself boil with rage. Did he want her to be like that doe? Was he ashamed that she wasn't an animagus like he was?
Lily knew, somewhere in her mind where common sense existed, that she shouldn't be jealous of an animal. It wasn't as if James was going to be whisked off by a herd of deer anytime soon. Still she felt her anger and hurt flare at their exchange. James looked up the precise moment Lily fled.
It was an idiotic thought, that she could run away from James who was faster than her even in human form.
"Lily, wait!" He called breathlessly. She paused as he caught up. "Why did you run off like that?"
"I didn't want to interrupt your deer mating ritual." She answered bitterly and he laughed loudly.
"Is that what was going on?" Lily shrugged in response. "She asked about you."
"You speak deer?"
"When I'm a deer..." James rolled his eyes at her question. "She just wanted to know who you were. She said you were pretty."
Lily blushed, deep red. "Oh."
"And you are, pretty, I mean. You don't have to be jealous." He cupped her face in his hands. "I fought so hard to have you, I'm never leaving."
He wrapped his arms around her waist and peppered kisses from her face down to her neck.
"Good." Lily finally said. "If that ever happens, I'm bringing deer hunting back in season."
