She jogs through the wasteland, holding the bulky metal object under one arm. Aircraft roar overhead, and the scent of death feels like it's seeping into her pores, even through the metal protection she's wearing.. Pulling out a gun, she shoots at the enemy- or what she thinks is the enemy. There's smoke everywhere, clouding her vision, obscuring her comrades as they are shot down, occasionally sliced through by blue light. She jumps, rattling off even more shots, watching with an inordinate amount of glee as bodies fall from abandoned ledges.
Explosions- small ones, but still dangerous, are everywhere. She's running, trying to get to her target, when something comes out of nowhere, and blasts her aside. Spinning, flying, and eventually landing in the dirt. She lands sprawled out, her oh so important hunk of metal by her side- her arm, that she knows she will never use again. She lays still for a second, contemplating how she has really fucked up this time, when someone else walks up to her. She moves her head, which seems to take a huge amount of effort, tilts it toward the bomb.
"Gil," she whispers, knowing what's going to happen because of her screw up.
He does not acknowledge her whisper, probably didn't even hear it, as he reaches over and grabs the capsule, activating jets a moment later, flying upwards, heading towards the target. He makes it inside, and stands, watching, for a few seconds, as the device in his hands beeps quicker and quicker. At the last second, he throws it into the middle of the ship, running out the door in a vain attempt to escape, uttering one person's name like it's a prayer.
"Elizabeta, Elizabeta."
The bomb explodes behind him, a mushroom cloud blooms across the surface of the Earth.
Similar ones dot the land as far as the eye can see.
But Elizabeta doesn't care about that. As she lays on the ground, wrapped in a complete sense of utter failure, all she can think is
That should have been me.
