It was early morning, the sky still dark and cold out. I sit up sleepily in my bed, dreading the events of the day. Today was reaping day in district 12, for the annual Hunger Games. I slowly make my way out of bed, going inti the kitchen. My younger brother and sister are already up and eating their breakfast, when I walk in. Thankfully, my brother is not yet old enough to participate in the reaping, since he is only ten. My sister, on the other hand, is thirteen, so this is her second year. For me, I am seventeen, which means I am on my sixth year. Each year, I take a tesserae, although I have forbade my siblings to do the same. My mother and father both work full-time, so it has been up to me to take care of them. My father works in the mines, while my mother is a seamstress.
As I grab my small breakfast, I hear my brother's small voice. "Morning, Arabella." He says quietly, not looking up from his food.
"Good morning, Alex." I reply, giving him a small smile, even though he doesn't see. I look over at my sister, who was occupying herself with a small stitch board. Anyone could see that she was a nervous wreck about this upcoming afternoon. "Morning, Madison." I say, trying to grab her attention. Instead of a reply, all I get is a small nod.
During the next hour or so, I help my siblings get ready, as well as myself. I then lead Madison to the thirteen year old section, then walking to the seventeen year old girls. My brother is with my parents as they watch the ceremony, discovering who will be fighting for their lives this year. All the talking ceases when our district escort, Aunile Minsle, walks on stage. She wears a purple wig, the hair long and straight, also she wears a short, purple dress and large purple heels. I'm going to take a guess that her theme this year is purple.
"Welcome, welcome. It is now the time to choose District 12's tributes, for this year's 58th Hunger Games!" She exclaims. My major question is, how can these Capitol people be so cheery about such a horrible event? When she walks across stage, she seems to bounce on each step. "Ladies first!" She says with the biggest smile.
