Don had accepted the videotape begrudgingly, uncertain why Charlie thought a documentary on the history of the number zero would be of interest to anyone who wasn't a mathematician.
He wondered how much history there could be. You have five apples you give away five apples you have zero left. Simple.
Still, Charlie had been so enamored of it, so excited about it, he couldn't bear to ruin his delight by telling him he wasn't interested.
He'd put off watching the video for weeks, telling Charlie he'd been too exhausted for TV, even though he had watched a few ball games on the weekends.
He finally managed to get off at a decent hour on Friday and found himself not just with time enough to cook a real dinner, but time enough for TV.
After perusing the listings for Friday night and not finding anything worth watching, he found the tape and popped it in as he sat down with his dinner plate.
His plate went cold before he could finish half of it.
When the tape ran out he rewound it and watched it again, after microwaving his dinner so he could finish it.
He still didn't finish it.
As hard as it was to believe, the history of the simple number zero was fascinating.
Charlie just smiled when Don returned the tape, effusive with praise for the topic.
Then he asked if Don would like to see a documentary about the number one.
