There was a light drizzle in the air as they all walked from the church to the cemetery. Out of all the people who had turned up for Wes' funeral there wasn't many dry eyes. Martine held onto Ronnie's arm and she sobbed silently. No one could even begin to think how she was feeling. Wes was a good man. A friend to so many people, a lot of those people was now gathered around his grave.

Sam, Angie and Natalie stood together whilst Joe was on the other side of Martine, gently patting her shoulder not really knowing how to be comforting. Henry stood next to Kate and Jake. Jake had his arm around Kate as she wiped away any tears that were forming. Today wasn't the day to be asking them about their 'not so secret anymore' relationship.

The three of them stepped forward to throw their roses into the grave, Jake holding Kate's hand as they did so.

Ronnie was the last to do this. "Bye mate." He said under his breath. "I miss ya."

The atmosphere in church had been unbearable. It was a surprise anyone had been able to sing the hymns Martine had chosen. She'd asked if any of them had wanted to say anything, out of respect they all had. Kate and Jake did there's together talking about Wes' jokes, Joe spoke about how Wes had given him a chance by giving him the job with MIU. When it was Ronnie's he told everyone how Wes was his best friend, one of the best people he'd ever met. He was a good copper and if it wasn't for people like him he'd have chucked it all in years ago.

People talked quietly at the wake; no one was really sure what to say. Wes had been killed and some of them were still in denial he was gone. They all expected their friend to walk in and laugh saying how ridiculous they all look. Ron felt like he'd lost Matty all over again.

Kate said she had to get some air and after a minute or so Jake went after her.

"When are you giving your evidence?" He asked. Both of them were to give their evidence about what happened the day Abi Glendon shot across court.

"Thursday, you?"

"Wednesday." He replied. "Did you hear about the plea?"

"Yeah." She nodded. "Her brief decided she was mentally unstable to know what she was pleading to. Manslaughter diminished responsibly." She scoffed slightly. "Abi knew damn well what she was doing, she was proud of it too."

Jake sensed something was wrong. "Kate, what's wrong?"

"I don't even know anymore. Wes is gone. Abi's gonna spend the rest of her life in prison because the system failed her, because I failed her. Everyone is falling apart and after all this shit we've been through in the last month we're meant to carry on like it didn't happen. We're not aloud to show any emotion because the commissioner is embarrassed about everything."

He put his hand on her back. "You didn't fail her, Kate."

"I was lead prosecutor. Maybe if I had done something differently, I could've made sure her father didn't get let out." She ran her hand through her hair. "I don't know how i I'm meant to be feeling right now but erm...numb springs to mind."

"Come here." He said softly before pulling her into his arms. "We'll all be ok soon."

"Really? What about Martin?"

"Yeah, I can't imagine how she's feeling either."

"Abi Glendon is going to prison for the murder of the man who ordered her husband's execution..."

He kissed the top of her head. "No one said life was easy."

"It's totally screwed up." She composed herself. "We should go back inside."

He nodded before they rejoined the others.
