River Song sank down to the ground against a bookshelf. Letting out a loud, long sigh, she let her head slump down in defeat. This was it. That day that she had been dreading all her life, it was finally here. And it was killing her so much faster than she'd ever bargained for.

She remembered telling her father about this fear. So many years ago.

"What did that mean- what you said to Amy. There's a worse day coming for you?"

She looked at him. "When I first met the Doctor, a long long time ago, he knew all about me. Think about that. Impressionable young girl and suddenly this man just drops out of the sky. He's clever and mad and wonderful and... and knows every last thing about her. Imagine what that does to a girl."

"I don't really have to." It took River a moment to realize that he was talking about Amy. The Doctor had come and swept her away. And Rory had been jealous of that all along.

"Trouble is, it's all back to front. My past is his future. We're traveling in opposite directions." She took in a breath, then went on to say the words that she had always kept to herself, always dreaded to say or hear. "Every time we meet I know him more, he knows me less. I live for the days when I see him. But I know that every time I do, he'll be one step further away. The day's coming when I'll look into that man's eyes, my Doctor- and he won't have the faintest idea who I am. And I think it's going to kill me."

Well here it was, that dreaded day. It was ten times more painful than she had expected.

"Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, I mean- you turned up on my doorstep with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the singing towers. Oh, what a night that was! The towers sang and you cried."

The computerized voice rang out across the library. "AUTODESTRUCT IN ONE MINUTE."

River looked at the Doctor with heartbreak in her eyes. "You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me your screwdriver, that should have been a clue."

He reaches for the screwdrivers, resting with River's diary, but they are too far for his.

"There is nothing you can do."

He looked up at her. "You can let me do this!"

"If you die here, it'll mean I've never met you," she protested.

"Time can be rewritten." There they were, those famous words, she'd heard him say them all her life. But this time she knew that it wouldn't be that way.

"Not those times. Not one line! Don't you dare." She stopped as her voice cracked. "It's okay," she whispered softly. "It's okay, it's not over for you. You'll see me again. You've got all of that to come. You and me, time and space. You watch us run!" She felt a tear falling down her cheek, but looked at him with a rock hard determination.

"River," he said to her. "You know my name."

"AUTODESTRUCT IN TEN..."

"You whispered my name in my ear."

"NINE, EIGHT, SEVEN..."

"There's only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name. There's only one time I could"

"Hush now. Spoilers." Spoilers. She had gotten that word from him. The first time she heard him say it, she had immediately loved it. It was their own personal joke, that word that meant millions of things and made her heart flutter. But now the word just tore that same heart in two.
