"I can't do it, I can't put him through this!" she sobbed, clutching at his shirt, desperate for comfort.

"Lily, listen to me!" he cried, tilting her head to look him in the eyes and placing a gentle hand on her swollen stomach, "Do you really believe that I'd let any harm come to you or that little fella in there?"

Lily shook her head, tears still escaping her shining emerald eyes. It broke James' heart to see her in a state like this, but he couldn't find any way to comfort her. He'd put all of his sorrow aside to soothe Lily, she was carrying a child that was destined for a life filled with doom. How could he make that sound anything but plain horrifying?

"B-but, he's going to have no proper life!" she stuttered, snuggling back into James' chest, "He'll be cooped up all the time, always wondering if today would be the day that he was going to come for him!"

These words had a profound effect on James. She was right; what if there was nothing James could do to protect their child? What if they all had to spend their lives living in fear, never venturing from the safe haven of their cottage in Godric's Hollow?

"Lily Potter, I will not allow any son of mine to live a life in constant fear!"

Lily was shocked by his aggressive, forceful tone and looked up at him. The hazel orbs that were his eyes were glistening with unshed tears. She hadn't thought about how James had taken the new of a prophecy being made about their unborn baby, he was probably just as traumatised as her.

"J-James?" she whispered, gently stroking his cheek,

"Please, Lily, let's not dwell on it?" he asked, his voice cracking as he spoke the last few syllables.

Lily nodded in agreement, desperately trying to stem the flow of tears escaping, but they were showing no signs of wanting to stop anytime soon. She continued to stroke James' face, he was breathing heavily, as though he'd very much like to cry as hard as Lily had been doing.

James blinked away the stinging, hot tears, he needed some distraction, some way to take his mind away from the daunting news that he had heard a mere hour ago.

"I'm gonna go and ask Sirius if he fancies coming round for tea, you OK with that?" he asked, planting a kiss on her pale forehead, now even more white than usual due to shock. Lily nodded yet again, it seemed like she was incapable of speech at that moment in time.

He headed for the door, turning to catch one last glance of his beloved Lily; his wife, the mother of his child. His child. James felt his heart lighten considerably at this thought; he had finally produced something worth being proud of.

No crackpot, power-hungry wizard was going to touch his child while he was still alive and kicking.
