Can I Be Your Memory?
It was his favorite time of day. Dinner time, she thought with a smirk. She walked three steps into the shade cooled grass beneath the large tree at the top of the hill and laid down, stretching out on the greenery. He left half a year ago, going on "the greatest quest" is what he had said.
She put a hand to the ground, using her earthbending to "watch" the two boys in the kitchen of the small house at the bottom of the hill. They were eating their last dinner at home before their aunt came to take them to the South Pole to learn more about their father's culture. A soft wind brought their conversation to her sensitive ears and a smile to her face.
"Do you think there's anything to earthbend at the South Pole?" asked the younger of the two.
"No. Uncle Aang said that it's all snow and ice and water. How does Mom expect me to eat this?" sighed the older boy. "There's no meat in it! A warrior needs meat if he's going to be strong enough to earn his wolf tail," he grumbled, sounding exactly like his father.
Toph lifted her hand, running her palm over the blades of grass, memories of all shapes and sizes of her husband running through her mind. Since he was gone, memories were all she had. She frowned, hearing her sons calling for her. No, memories weren't all she had. She stood, straightening her tunic and smiling again as she stretched her toes out into the ground. She turned, forgetting the list of things she needed to pack for a moment, and reached out.
Her fingers brushed the cold, roughness of the headstone as she whispered, "I miss you, Sokka."
