Summary: We've all read about Max and her Flock. But what if some other experiments had gotton out as well, before the Flock did?

Disclaimer: If it's familier to the books, it ain't mine. Patterson owns the oh so lovely Flock and the Erasers, I'm simply borrowing a few and having fun. No suing, unless you want pennies.

Prologue

I'm not a storyteller. I'm always backtracking to add something more, so my stories never make sense. Carlos, the third eldest in our family insists that I tell this story. Our story. He seems to think that I can actually tell a story. That I'm the best in our family.

We don't even know what to call ourselves, other then The Family. Yeah, real original eh?

We're freaks of nature.

A bunch of curious scientists decided to see what would happen when they grafted animal DNA to human DNA. We're the results.

We have a couple groups in our family. The Aeries, and The Grazers. Yup. We're sticking to real original names here.

My name is Cris, and I'm the elected leader of The Family. It's my responsibility to keep them all safe. I don't know why they selected me. I don't like talking to people, and I certainly don't care about anyone else? Right? Wrong. Well, I don't like talking to people, but this strange family has wormed its way into my cold black heart, and I actually care.

I escaped the school when I was four, long before Max ever got out. Her and her flock are my idols. But you didn't hear me say that.

This rich couple on the outskirts of town had an only child, but he got hit by a car the day before I started hanging around their place. I stayed in their vast forest most of the time. The guy was the first to notice this, and he actually went camping in his own forest to find out where I was sleeping.

He found me one morning, fast asleep in the crook of a tree. I woke up, and startled, I'd fled the place. I was four, no laughing. When I came back four days later, really hungry and thirsty, I was surprised to find the tree I'd claimed as mine had been completely changed.

The man had constructed a small house fort up in the trees, complete with separate sections in different trees and pathways from tree to tree. It was so cool, that I went up to the house and thanked him.

I still live in the house today.

The only difference is that I have company. And my own neighbours. Namely Carlos.

A/N: Yes, I know. It's short. But please forgive the shortness, as I'm trying to write a fanfiction that is a spinoff from a book that I've only read twice (so far) and I absolutely love. I haven't read the second book yet. Once I do, I'll add in stuff so that the two stories jive together. Plot ideas are always great. You review and give me an idea and I'll try to incorporate it.

I'll try to lengthen the prologue to two pages before I go on to post the first chapter.
