The Great Mushroom War
No one knows how it started, but everyone knows how it ended. Did it start because of resources? Was it fought over territory? Religion? Race? No one alive today knows how it began. Everyone knows how it ended. Every country that had nuclear weapons used them. The Great Mushroom War had begun. Countries that were once allies now destroyed each other with radiation and fire. Nations that were enemies now had an excuse to annihilate each other. The war lasted for approximately two hours. Cities were destroyed. Mountains were formed and destroyed. Millions of people were slaughtered instantly. The planet was thrown into darkness because of the ashes and dust. The Great Mushroom War ended and so did the old world.
The world was in darkness. A nuclear winter had started. Flora and fauna that survived the War were killed because of the toxic air and lack of sunlight. Yet humans survived, but their humanity didn't. Humans lived underground and banded together. Then, after twenty years of darkness, the ash settled and the Sun finally shined on the world again… to reveal a world scarred with craters and deserts. Humans returned to the surface and tried to start anew, but it was brutal. The radiation changed and warped the bodies and minds of the remaining humans and animals. Humans interacted with irradiated objects and their DNA fused with the object to become a hybrid. For example, a human got bitten by a irradiated bat. Two weeks later, the human turned into a creature with an aversion to sunlight and a thirst for blood. This hybrid was known as the vampire. Creatures in myth were suddenly brought to life because of the mutating properties of radiation. Dragons, trolls, goblins, talking animals, and undead were suddenly walking the earth. Some humans had their DNA fused with simple items like candy. Some humans gained powers that were the result of radiation. Levitation, teleporting, and other powers were appearing. Soon, people began to think of it as magic.
Eventually, trees started to come back. Grass was growing and animals were starting to increase in population. By this time, the irradiated humans formed their own governments. Humans who had their DNA fused with candy built an entire town and castle out of candy. Talking animals were now commonplace. "Magic" was making people into wizards. Humans that were not affected to radiation turned feral and solitary. All the denizens of this strange world assumed humans had gone extinct. That is, until the parents of a certain stretchy dog found a human baby wearing a white bear hat. The old world was gone. In its place, the Land of Ooo was born. It all started with the end.
