He didn't know where he was. The last thing he remembered was being thrown back as the train hit the car. Now he seemed to be floating. He could hear voices, Margo telling Bob and John there had been an accident, paramedics working, Bob breaking the news to Luke's family, John and Margo talking about how to tell Katie given the circumstances. Lily sobbing, Katie reassuring Chris that Reid would come through. Broken fragments of conversations.
He wondered if he were dead. He didn't feel any of the pain that would be expected from a train crash. He never really thought about the afterlife which now that he thinks about it is kind of strange given he faced death every day. Then he wondered where Luke was, why he hadn't seen him. Everything goes white.
He hears surgeons and machines beeping. He's in an operating room, somebody says his name. He's listening to the doctors try to save his life. Again everything goes white. He doesn't know how long it been but he can tell by the sounds he's no longer in surgery. This blinding white background with sound was getting old. He wanted his life back. He wanted to know where the hell he was. Was he dead? Is this the afterlife? Damn it, he wanted to know if Luke was okay.
Suddenly he was at the pond. This was the first time, in whatever hell he was in, that he'd been able to see something. Luke was sitting with his feet in the water. He called out to Luke, who turned around and smiled.
"Come on, let's go swimming." Luke said.
"Luke, are you okay? Have you been here the entire time?"
"Yeah, where have you been?"
"I don't know. What do you remember?"
"We kissed as the train hit the car. Then I ended up here. Are we dead?"
"How the hell should I know?"
"You're the doctor."
"I must have missed the day they taught how to check if you're dead."
