Sucky fanfiction time, go!
"Kaitlyn!" Zoe cried out. "Kaitlyn, help me!" Kaitlyn rushed down the wooden stairs. Unfortunately, the toe of her converse caught on the edge of something lying on the bottom step. She slammed to the ground. Zoe screamed again. She reached for something lying on the table. A knife. At that moment, a huge back mass wrapped itself around her and jumped out the window.
A spray of shattered glass hit Kaitlyn in the face, leaving a large gash just above her eye, and several smaller cuts as well. She sat up and pulled her knees to get chest, tasting the metallic flavor of her own blood, gushing down her face.
"Zoe?" she called, though she knew it was no use. There would never be an answer. "Goodbye," she whispered through tears she had only just realized were there.
Within an hour, police arrived, asking questions and marking the door with a bright yellow 'X' of tape.
"Do you know who took Miss Truesdale?"
Kaitlyn heard the question, but staring at the wall, splattered with the blood of her best friend, she couldn't bring herself to answer, or even acknowledge the question.
"Miss Burns?"
Kaitlyn snapped out of her trance. "What?"
"Did you see who took Miss Truesdale?"
She shook her head. "It was this big black mass. It grabbed her, and-and..." She shivered unable to continue.
"It's alright, Miss," the chubby police officer said, his mustache seeing to weigh down his mouth and chins. He turned to the group of people inspecting the window. "We'll be leaving now."
That night, Kaitlyn slept in a motel. She couldn't stand to be in her house, so quiet without Zoe, yet so loud with her memory of the previous night. Certainly there was some hope of Zoe being alive, but not much. Sure, she was last seen breathing, but what difference did that make? What had that thing done to her? What was it? Why did it only want Zoe?
Kaitlyn buried her head in her arms. Nothing made sense. For hours, she lay in bed awake, sobbing quietly and trying to sleep. Questions ran through her mind. They never seemed to stop coming.
