Without Fear
A simple little one shot drabble regarding Sesshomaru and Rin. I own nothing.. blah blah bla. Don't sue, you'll only get a couple pennies and perhaps some pocket lint, which I would be willing to part with if asked nicely.
Feather soft was the humming that flowed along the late summer breeze. Evening had set in and the perfume of wild flowers and grass were intoxicating they were so thick. The sun was setting low on the horizon, and the world for once, felt at peace. A rare moment.
She confused him. No, it was more than that. She caused him to question everything - his own beliefs. It should frustrate him, but it didn't. It only caused more confusion. No matter what happened, it seemed impossible for her to cause any sort of negative sensation within him. Exhaling slowly, the man shifted his golden eyes towards the sinking sun. What was his purpose? No, that wasn't the right question. He knew his purpose, or at least, what he believed to be his purpose. Or was it a goal? His brows furrowed ever so slightly, then his gaze drifted off to the unsuspecting figure who now sat in a field of flowers.
Never before had he known another living being to feel no ill will towards anyone or anything. He had seen fear and sadness within those small features, but never any sort of hatred. For all of his intelligence and years of life experience, he simply could not wrap his mind around that fact. It was near incomprehensible to him.
He studied the female as she sat not twenty feet away, weaving together flowers, and completely unaware of the dangers that lurked all around her. Dangers that he would never let touch her. Not this one. This one would remain free from the corrupted world she was born into, for as long as he could possibly help it. But why? He could have just as easily left her behind so many times.
Then, the mighty demon lord made the mistake of looking at the small human child, and not simply glancing at her as usual. All thoughts paused as he watched her there, examining flowers, picking only the ones that met her approval, and absently humming a tune to herself. Then it struck him. There was something terribly calming about her presents. Again, he had no idea why. Finally, he gave up on his thoughts, finding they would only drag him around in an endless loop.
"Look my Lord," Sesshomaru turned his gaze downward towards the voice that now rose the area around his feet. Rin had approached the rock he was seated upon and was holding a ring of wild flowers towards him. "I made this for you!" Before she had a chance to finish her sentence, she had slipped the small thing on his lap with a light giggle.
"Don't be foolish child, Lord Sesshomaru has no need for such silly things..." Jaken began in his usual manner, but he didn't get very far.
"Jaken. Build a fire. We will camp here for the night." Sesshomaru made no attempt to move from his spot, or even look back at his follower.
"I..ub... y... yes me'lord. Of course." The stammered response almost made the Lord of the Western Lands smile. Almost. Regardless, he made no move to remove the ring of flowers that rested on his leg.
As Rin scampered off to help Jaken gather the appropriate wood for the fire, Sesshomaru allowed his eyes to fall upon the small, useless object. What was he to do with such a thing? It was ridiculous. Flowers. How utterly pointless.
Even as those thoughts ran through his mind one fact remained that he couldn't shake. A child - a human child - had thought of him, without fear.
