Chapter 1

Rustboro's Pokémon Center was full of disappointed trainers. The gym leader, Roxanne, had pulverized countless rookie trainers. One trainer in particular couldn't even make it to Roxanne, and blamed his loss wholly on his Treecko, Vernon.

"You're so stupid! If you had used Bullet Seed like I told you to, we could've moved on to Roxanne!"

Vernon stared stupidly.

"Gah! I can't wait until I get that Torchic! Then I can return you back to Professor Birch! In fact, I'll save him the trouble and just get rid of you! I hate you, Vernon!"

Already-irritated trainers were utterly disappointed in his behavior towards his Pokémon. This trainer's name was Basil. He has never won the hearts of his peers; those who knew him wish they didn't. He was 18, and had adopted the antics of his ill-hearted father.

Vernon still stared, with a tear trickling down his beaten face. Nurse Joy has had it with Basil's behavior. This wasn't the only time he's lashed out on his Treecko in public. Other Nurse Joys have warned each other of Basil:

"Watch out for a blonde young man with an emo-styled haircut. His clothes usually reek of Potions and other Pokémon healing items. His piercing blue eyes make him appear innocent, so don't be fooled by his facade. He wears the same yellow running shoes wherever he goes; they look like they've been mauled by an infuriated Arcanine. And lastly, he tends to tap his foot as if he were listening to a song. If you watch for these characteristics, you can't miss him."

Nurse Joy bandaged Vernon up and went to speak with Basil.

"Excuse me, Basil, is it? There's a new law being passed in this region that allows Pokémon officials to confiscate physically, verbally, and/or mentally abused Pokémon. The Joys and Jennys of every city in every region have been notified of you. We all know how you've treated this poor Treecko and we WILL take action if this kind of behavior continues."

She didn't wait for an answer or any kind of response. Her clarity filled the entire center. She walked off and finished up treating Vernon.

Vernon wagged his tail and hopped off of the table. Though a lot of the attention had already left Basil, he still felt the world staring him down; he just wanted to leave at that point. Vernon raised his arms waiting to be lifted. Basil slowly turned away… and stormed out the center's doors. Vernon followed.

Nurse Joy snickered, "Take notice, my fellow trainers. THAT is the walk of a disgraceful trainer. A trainer who will experience only the hatred he illustrates towards those whom he should be devoted to. Let those who adore him reflect his abhorrence unto him."
