Chapter 1. A dream fulfilled
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit…
Meanwhile, in a house in an average American suburb there lived a girl. She was pretty average – average looking, average height, got average grades… even her name was unexceptional - Kelly.
Being sixteen, her whole life was a struggle. In the morning, she struggled to get her hair to look nice and to cover up the stubborn pimples, that kept appearing despite half her allowance going towards acne remedies. At school, it was a struggle to stay awake in boring classes and to try and fit in with the popular crowd at school. After school, she struggled (and usually failed) not to argue with her mother as they drove to softball practice and then home, where she struggled with her homework. She especially hated math, since fourth grade it has been a constant bane of her existence.
At least, she thought as she shut the door of her room behind that fateful evening, she had no brothers, her best friend Jess always complained about her younger brother bugging her. At least, when Kelly was in her room, no one bugged her…. Well, mom sometimes did, but it was easy enough to tune her out, Kelly had plenty of practice.
The school was out for the winter recess, and Kelly was looking forward to having almost two weeks to do whatever she wanted. And what she wanted was to watch Hobbit again and again. It became her favorite movie two years ago, when the first part came out, and then the second one was even better. And now she had just seen the third part – and it was good… but the ending just did not feel right. When she imagined it all in her head before going to see the movie, she never thought Kili would die. He was just too cute to die, and good guys are not supposed to be killed in fantasy movies, are they? It was all that stupid elf, Tauriel… if not for her shouting and needing help, Kili would have lived. If only there was someone there to save him, to warn him, someone better than the dumb redhead… So Kelly did the thing that felt right – she put in the blu-ray of the Unexpected Journey and hit "Play". As the movie started, she kept imagining her right there with them – in Bilbo's home, on the journey along with them… if she was right there, Kili would never get involved with that stupid Tauriel, and she would actually help him, not hinder him when it came to fighting! She used to do taekwondo twice a week until last year, when she broke her arm and had to wait for it to heal, and then just never got back into it, signing up for softball instead, because that's what Jess played…
Just as Thorin commanded to give Bilbo a pony, Kelly felt suddenly dizzy and heavy headed. It was such a strange feeling, she had never experienced anything like it before. Could it be happening? Could it really be happening? She squeezed her eyes tight, and when she opened them, not only did she see green trees instead of off-white pain of her bedroom wall, but she felt fresh breeze on her face, and she was staring right in the face of a pony. A pony on whose back sat none other than Kili.
