Pretences

It was all pretences and Light knew it. He knew that L was 100% sure he was Kira but had no evidence to back it up. Thankfully, in the justice system you couldn't base accusations on blunt "intuition". Light also knew the two were lying to themselves. The times they had were far more than lust-filled trysts. Light Yagami was in love with L and was sure the older man felt the same. While there was no denying it, there was also no acting upon it. First of all, they had to keep up a front for the rest of the task force. Secondly, deep down in their hearts they knew it would end in tragedy. They were enemies, they proverbial Romeo and Juliet of their time. If they were to be openly romantic with each other, it would end in death. Being the two men that they were, neither could afford to become attached to someone. Surely it would cause too much emotional pain when the inevitable – death – happened. Light knew this but yet, for some reason he kept coming back to L. Perhaps he'd become somewhat addicted to the heat and passion of bodies and lips colliding. Or maybe, he didn't want to face the reality of it all. One side of him insisted with all it's might that there was nothing to love about the eccentric detective. The other side however, disagreed. Pretences are lonely, causing a certain level of separation between the heart and the mind. Light certainly felt a hollow pain in his chest every time he pondered these things. In the end though, he knew this much "L must die, in order to keep the new world safe and full of justice. Regardless of my trivial emotions." These thoughts would help him in the end. Wouldn't they?
