Just a little one-shot as I try to get myself back into writing. New fandom for me. Enjoy.
Next Time, It's Your Turn
"So how long were you working as a C.I. for boss?"
Erin lowered the binoculars and turned to look at Jay, who was sitting idly in the passenger seat, the camera ready in his hands for whenever their perp left the premises. "Where did that come from?"
Jay shrugged, "I've been wondering for a while. And well, we've got all the free time in the world."
"Is the whole unit asking around?" Erin's raspy voice whispered.
"Nah. Just me."
"I met Hank when I was fourteen. He raided a drug house and there I was, overdosing in the bathroom on the second floor." She cleared her throat and turned her gaze across the street. She wasn't going to get distracted enough to forget about the job they were sent to do. "I was technically a suspect, so he rode with me in the ambulance to the hospital as the arresting officer. I don't know, I guess something about me stood out to him. I was this tiny, bratty little teenager who wanted absolutely no help from anybody. Especially him." She sighed, "I was a minor and they couldn't find my parents so I was put in a group home. When Hank dropped me off, he handed me his card, said to call him if I ever needed anything."
"So you called him?"
"Not right away."
"He kept bailing me out of trouble, I always had information for him and he was always able to keep me out of jail." She sighed, "When I turned sixteen, I hit rock bottom, dropped off the face of the earth and that's when I finally called him."
"What made you call him?"
"I was about to give birth in the middle of a crack house."
"Oh."
She sighed, "yep. Long story short, Hank and his wife took me in and by the grace of God, somehow managed to get my act together. Got my G.E.D and Hank was able to expunge my record. Went to college and then the academy…" she shrugged, "and now I'm here. Any other questions?"
Jay cleared his throat, "what happened to the baby?"
Her mind flashed back to the few minutes she'd been given to hold her baby in her arms. "He didn't make it. He was born too early."
"Oh, sorry."
"It wasn't your fault," she sighed, "it was mine. I didn't take care of myself."
"Were you using at the time?" He hated to even ask.
Erin shook her head, "absolutely not. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I was done with drugs."
"What did you name him?"
"What makes you so sure I named him?"
"I know you, Erin. Whether you like to think so or not, I do. And you needed closure."
Erin sighed and pulled her gaze away from Jay's. "Henry Nicholas."
Jay nodded, he knew he had just made plenty of progress with Erin. "That's a solid name."
"Thanks." There was a beat of silence and both turned their gazes back on the building across the street. "And Jay?"
"Yeah?"
"Next time, it's your turn to tell me a secret."
Jay smiled, "deal."
