He stood, positively glowing with pride, as he watched his young students and their friends celebrating their rebirth in Jesus Christ. The Lord always worked in mysterious ways, and at long last, after baptizing five, young mutants, Kurt finally understood why he had been able to become an ordained Preacher even if the original means of his Priesthood had proven to be a trap. The tip of his tail twitched swiftly as he reflected for just a moment, but then the joyous laughter of his students brought his mind back to the present.
A hand clasped his shoulder. "Congratulations."
"Zank you." Kurt smiled at Scott, knowing that he understood that this was just as much a victory for him as it was for his students and their God.
"Kurt, I . . . I'm sorry about what happened . . . " Scott's words failed him as they so often did when he tried to approach a delicate subject better left unmentioned. He cleared his throat and tried again, " . . . before with those other Priests."
Kurt shook his head and smiled. His fangs glimmered in the sunlight pouring through the cathedral windows of the church he had built himself here on the mutants' island home. "Zink nozing of it, mein freund. It happened for a reason." When Scott looked at him clearly puzzled, Kurt spread his three-fingered hands before him and continued, "If I had not gone zrough zose trials, I vould not have become a Priest. I vould not have been able to preach to zese young mutants and ze ozers of us who so desperately need to hear God's vord in zis church, or any ozer. I vould not have been able to baptize zem, Scott."
His yellow eyes looked up at his friend's ruby quartz visor; his furry, blue tail swished again. "Zey vould still be lost." He looked back to his students, so young, happy, and, for a short while at least, carefree. "Ve could have still found zem, saved zem from ze bigoted humans, but zeir souls vould not have been saved, Scott. Now zey are." He beamed. "Now zey know zet, no matter how many times ze humans tell zem zey are Demons, Hellspawn, or in any ozer vay belong to ze Devil, zey are, in truth, God's children. Ve all are."
His students were looking for him. His whole, furry body grew rigid with his desire to be amongst them and further celebrating in their happy occasion.
Scott patted his shoulder. "Go on," he told him. "Go to your children, Father Kurt." Kurt did so unhesitantly.
The X-Men's leader smiled secretly to himself, knowing that the children were not the only ones who had been found. Kurt had found his true calling in life and was closer now to God than ever before; like the children, he, too, would never again be lost. Scott eventually left to resume his leadership duties but not without a prayerful wish that God would bless and lead him just as well as he had Kurt.
The End
