There was Eru, who in Arda was called Ilúvatar; and he made first the Ainur, and they were with him before all else was made. And it came to pass that Ilúvatar called together the Ainur declared to them a mighty theme, unfolding to them things greater and more wonderful than he had yet revealed...but it came into the heart of Melkor to interweave matters of his own imagining, that were not in accord with the theme of Ilúvatar...He had gone often alone into the void, seeking the Sacred Flame. But he found it not, for the Fire is with Ilúvatar. (Ainulindalë)
Light of Light,
west of West:
Shining halls
Forever blest.
-o-
For where He dwells,
The Sacred Flame
Burnt long and bright.
Then Shadow came...
-o-
The Music changed
As voices swayed-
A cornerstone
Of Evil laid.
-o-
Yet highest note,
In deepest chord-
Victorious still
Was Ea's Lord.
-o-
As Vairë wove
The countless years,
Nienna's face
Grew drenched with tears.
-o-
For Arda now
Enringed with flames,
Beset by Evil's
Many Names.
-o-
Then Arda laughed
As Morgoth's crown,
In splintered shards,
came tumbling down.
-o-
Inviolate-
Yet still the Flame
Burns bright against
All dark domain.
