Move Over

"You'll be fine, Mr. Kent. Just get some sleep."

Yeah, right, Jonathan thought as he thanked her. Exhausted though he was, sleep felt far away. He was beginning to loathe hospitals. The harsh lights; the itchy hospital gown; the antiseptic odor—it all nauseated him.

And it had to be even worse for Martha.

He turned to her as she watched the nurse leave. Her face was a mask of calm, but he felt her hand trembling.

"Sweetheart? You should rest, too."

She shifted her gaze and studied him. The frozen look in her eyes changed to quiet determination.

"I'm going to," she said. "Move over."

"What? Martha, you can't—"

"Yes, I can." She looked at him levelly. "I've done it a hundred times."

His tired brain struggled with this. In all the times he'd been here, he couldn't remember her ever . . . Then it dawned on him. Last summer.

He could think of no response, except to move over.

She slipped in beside him, avoiding his injured knee, and put her head on his chest. A sigh escaped her. He pulled the blanket up around her shoulders and kissed her hair before settling down to sleep.
