Tale of the Back Pack
Jonny, sat on the roof of the hotel, watching the moon and feeling the cool breeze on his face. "This is such an awesome view," he said smiling. Just then a black bat flew over to him and instantly became his girlfriend Mavis Dracula.
"Hey Jonny, where you been, I have been looking all over the hotel for you," she said.
"Oh sorry honey, I was just checking out the view, it is so, beautiful, but not as beautiful as you," he said smiling. She blushed and sat next to him. They have been traveling, for a year since they met, and for her 119th birthday, Mavis wanted to return home. Jonny wanted to see the old castle as well as the monsters that stayed here, happily agreed. As they sat there enjoying each other's company, Mavis spotted Jonny's back pack. That old thing never left his side and if did, he would put it in a safe place. Mavis always wondered what was so special about it.
"Hey Jonny, I was wondering, why are you so protective over your back pack?" she asked. His calm expression changed, his face paled and he grew uneasy.
"Um, oh, uh because it has all my stuff in it, yeah that is it," he said laughing nervously. Mavis could tell by his body language that wasn't the reason.
"Oh come on my blood orange, you can tell me the real reason," she whispered in his ear.
"I just rather not talk about it," he said, growing more nervous. Mavis could tell Jonny was upset about something, and figured if he talked about it, then he would feel better. Yet, there was only one way to get him to talk. With a sly smile she transformed back into a bat and flew right in his face. Then she gave him the pouty bat face. "Hey, no fair honey," Jonny said trying to look away, but couldn't.
"Okay, okay you win, I will tell you," Jonny said. Mavis smiled and transformed back into her human self and sat by Jonny again. "This happened a long time ago, when I turned 18. My dad bought me this back pack and with all of my other brothers, would plan our father and son, adventure. I was the youngest and it was finally my turn. He bought me my back pack and we planned on our trip," Jonny said.
"What happened?" Mavis asked.
"On the day, we were going to leave my dad was killed in a car accident," Jonny said, frowning. Mavis frowned and placed a hand on his shoulder. She knew more than anyone what it felt like to lose a parent. When she was just a baby, she lost her mother. "I was so, destroyed that I couldn't just leave my mom, or brothers. Yet, my eldest brother, said dad wouldn't want me to stay here and hide from the world. So, when I turned nineteen, I headed off on my own adventures, seeing all the sights, dad and I would have seen together. Also, why I am so protective over my back pack," Jonny said smiling. It felt good to finally tell the story and lessened the pain in his heart.
"Thank you for telling me Jonny, I for one am glad you didn't hide from the world. If you have we never would have met," Mavis said kissing his cheek.
"Exactly, and I couldn't imagine my life without you Mavis, my wonderful zing," he said. Then they smiled at each other and kissed under the full moon.
