Chapter 1

Richard Hanna was only twenty years old when he enlisted in the Marines. It was no doubt that he would join the military since his great-grandfather, grandfather, uncle and his own father served too. His undeniable dream was always to keep the hanna tradition foward and that his future son will continue the tradition by joining the marines as well.

Being raised by a marine father Richard grew to be a determined and courageous person who didn't take crap from anybody. Some people would also describe him as cold. This personality disapeared for a while when he met Vivian Martin in 1971 while serving in the marines for about four years. She was a beautiful, kind, loving woman who always kept a smile on her face. Through her father who was Major General in the Marines they met for the first time at a dinner party for military members and their families and instantly fell in love when her father introduced her to Richard.

The wedding followed a year later and in the same year their first child was born on January 5th. That day Richard was stationed in Germany and was heartbroken that he couldn't be with his wife in the hospital and meet his newborn child. But a call from the Commander to his office would change it all. Not knowing what to expect Richard knocked on the door and opened it when the Commander gave him the order. The Commander sat behind his table reading some files. As soon as he put the files aside, Richard noticed his picture being on the front page and it immediately came across his mind that the Commander read his file.

"Sir, you wanted to talk to me" Richard said, standing opposite the table.

"Sit down" The Commander ordered. Richard sat down and the Commander continued "Congratulations".

Richard realizing why the Commander called him to his office "Thank you Sir".

"I was talking to your father in law this morning and he told me that his first grandchild was born this morning and now we have two hours before midnight. Through him i had to find out why you were not concentrated today. Do you know what i would have told you if you just told me about this?" The Commander gave him a serious look.

"No, sir. I don't know" Richard answered. After a few minutes of silence the Commander stood up and ordered Richard to stand up too. He walked around his table and stood right in front of him "Go see your family Richard"

"But the country needs me sir" Richard said.

"Your family needs you" The Commander and him shook hands "Spent some time with them"

With an agreement that he would take some time off Richard walked out the door and took the next plane to Brooklyn, New York. He couldn't wait to meet his child and was even more excited since he didn't know the gender yet. But still he thought it would have been better if he told the Commander right away after he got the news that his child was born. But to Richard the country was important to him too and he didn't want to disapoint.

The early next morning Richard arrived at the hospital. Still wearing his uniform he asked for his wife's room. The nurse friendly enough showed him the way and his heart melted which didn't happen often when he saw his wife laying in the bed while the baby was wrapped up in her arms. He moved closer to her and she smiled at him when she saw her husband . Richard gave her a kiss on her forehead and draw his attention to the sleeping baby.

"It's a boy" She whispered.

"A son" He said, smiling and being happy. A son that will grow to be strong, determained, courageous, loyal and a big teddy bear. Grow to be a good man. "You have a name?" Richard continued.

Vivian looked at her son and kissed him on his forehead before she answered "Samuel Richard Hanna".
