Singing Mountain

"LINK!" the young woman cried as she ran up to the boy in green, lying in snow, its pure white complexion stained with a fading red substance. She collapsed beside him, gently cradling his head and torso in her arms, pressing his head against her chest, resting her chin on his floppy green cap, crying as she rocked backwards and forwards. Beside him was the legendary Master Sword, stained with the black blood of Hyrule's enemies and his trusty and loyal Hylian Shield. His horse was resting beside him, trying to get a response from her dying master.

All around them were the corpses of monsters that were trying to invade Hyrule and kill the princess. Link went to stop them, and succeeded, but at the cost of a heavy price. He was wounded all over and he was smothered in not only the monsters' blood ... but his own. His eyes fluttered a little and they opened drearily. He coughed up some blood and the girl stopped hugging him and laid his body gently in front of her, holding him up.

"Z-Zelda ..." he croaked out wearily. She hung her head and said "If only I could've come a bit sooner. You wouldn't be like this." Link shook his head and replied "It wasn't your fault. These monsters were after the death of you and all in Hyrule. I had to stop them." Zelda squeezed her eyes shut as tears threatened to fall. She shook her head and said "You've done so much for Hyrule already, Link. You didn't need to sacrifice yourself again on Hyrule's behalf." Link made a noise between a wince and a grunt and replied "It wasn't just for Hyrule. It was also ... on your behalf. I am more than willing to do this and anything else for you." His breathing was slowing down dramatically and Zelda's eyes widened and she started to panic. She looked in her pouch for anything that may heal any part of him but Link laid a strong hand on her shoulder. She stopped and looked at him slowly.

Link breathed out "T-Tell my friends in the village about what I've done. T-Tell them ... that I'll be watching over them in the Sacred Realm. T-Tell them ... that I did not die in vain and that I died protecting Hyrule once again. T-Tell them ... that I love them like my family, and that ... they always will ... be in my heart." Zelda's tears fell down her face without blinking or sobbing. Her tears were silent, made cold by the winds of Snowpeak Mountain, and they fell down her freezing and grimy cheeks, falling ever so slowly.

She nodded and said "I will. I'll tell them. I promise." Link smiled and said "With what I said before, that I'd do anything for you, well, it's only for one reason ..." Zelda looked straight into his eyes and asked "What?"

His breathing was fading fast, as well as his heart rate. He croaked out "Z-Zelda. You are the most beautiful person in the world, in more ways than one. You've been there for me when I've needed you most and we have been by each other's sides for a whole year. I've loved every moment with you, and still am, even on my dying day. I ... I love you ... Zelda." His heart had finally stopped beating.

Zelda started sobbing and clung onto his body for dear life and screamed "LINK! NO, DON'T GO! I LOVE YOU TOO, LINK!" His last sentence was spoken as she cried into his lifeless form "The mountain ... it's singing." As Zelda kissed his frozen lips, as Link's eyes closed for a final time, the mountain winds and his brethren of wolves sung him his everlasting lament. The mountain ... was singing.
