The Monsters I See
"Daddy!" an innocent voice screamed loudly, echoing through the house, Jerking up quickly and jolting towards the sound of his son's cry, he run up the hallway, slinging open the door of the boy's bedroom. "Daddy!" relief fills his father's mind. "You're okay" he says under his breath. The young toddler with bleach blond colored hair ran to his father, wrapping his tiny arms around his knees. Tears streamed from his blue eyes. "Austin, it's okay. I'm here." Fred spoke softly, instantly calming the young child. "What happened?" he asked, after his son finally caught his breath. "Mo-..monsters." he whimpered, burying his head in Fred's chest. Fred's frown went unnoticed to his small boy. "Monsters?" he repeated as Austin sniffled and nodded his head. "Monsters aren't real, buddy." he assured, placing his generous sized hands on his son's arms, looking into his eyes as the rocket ship shaped nightlight lit the room dimly. "They are! I see them!" he insisted. "Where? Where are they?" Fred asked, a panic feeling flooding inside him. Austin looked down, shyly ignoring his father. "Austin" he said firmly, catching his attention. "Where are they?" staring at his father he finally answered. "You and mommy were with them. I saw you in the newspaper..a-and on tv. They almost got you and mommy." he admitted. Shocked, Fred's mouth fell open. "I heard something outside..I thought they came to get you.." he muttered in his toddler voice, All he managed to gather was something to assure him that both him and his mom were going to be fine, but acknowledged the problem needed to be resolved in the morning. "We're fine Austin. We aren't going anywhere. Monsters and ghosts are just bad guys in masks. Nothing for you to worry about. I'll always protect mommy and you." he smoothed gently. tucking his son tight in the bedsheets. "Whose gonna protect you daddy?" Austin asked innocently, looking up at his face. Fred smiled, kneel down and kissed his forehead. "Don't worry about dad." laughing slightly. Austin closed his eyes and tugged his teddy bear. "I'll try to protect you daddy" he said sweetly through a soft yawn, Fred grinned and ran his hands through his son's thick hair. "Thanks buddy." he whispered, carefully leaving the room and tip-toeing back to his bedroom.
Snuggling back under the sheets with the warmth of his wife's body resting in the spot near his. "Freddy" she moaned sleepily. "Yeah?" he answered quietly. "Is Austin okay?" he sighed heavily. "He's afraid of monsters, Daph. And it's my fault." Daphne placed her petite hand on his chest. "Stop blaming yourself, we'll talk about this in the morning. Get rest sweetheart." she smoothed. He smiled softly, closing his eyes and drifting into dreamland.
