Decisions

Lucy smiled as she placed the cup of coffee down on the table where Lysander was sitting.

'Thanks Luce,' he said.

'You okay?' she asked and he shrugged.

'I've been better,' he admitted.

Lucy glanced over at the counter before turning back to Lysander.

'Hold that thought,' she said before hurrying over to the counter.

She returned a couple minutes later with a large glass full of chocolate milk and she took the seat across from him.

'Want to talk about it?' she asked and he shrugged.

'What's there to talk about?' Lysander said moodily, staring into the dark brown liquid. 'She moved in with him. She quite clearly loves him. I never really stood a chance.'

Lucy watched him sadly not knowing what to say. This had always been an awkward subject for her. One of her closest friends was in love with another close friend but she was in love with someone else. Lucy was over the moon for Lily and knew that Scorpius really made her happy but on the other hand that caused Lysander to be miserable.

'I should have said something to her ages ago,' he sighed leaning back in his chair and looking out of the window. 'I had so many opportunities but I never said anything to her…' his voice trailed away.

'Maybe you should move on,' Lucy said carefully. 'I mean you said yourself; you could have told her, but you didn't. And Scorpius did. Maybe you should just… let her go.'

Lysander looked up at her and stared at her, his expression unreadable. The minutes trickled by and Lucy had just begun to feel uncomfortable when Lysander looked away with a sigh.

'I know,' he said heavily. 'But it's not that easy.'

'I never said it would be,' Lucy said watching him. His words came back to her and she took hold of her courage. To tell him something she'd been holding back for years.

'Maybe you need to stop wondering about what could have been and start thinking about what is happening. And,' Lucy hesitated before continuing determinedly,' and maybe you need to realise that while you've been chasing after Lily and being miserable about her being with someone else, someone actually fell for you along the way and she's been holding back her feelings because she knew you weren't ready.'

Lucy stood up and took hold of her empty glass. Lysander was staring at her, clearly surprised.

'So whenever you're ready, I'll be waiting,' she said and before her bravery failed her she bent down and kissed him on the cheek.

Before Lysander could say anything Lucy walked away.

He sat there for a while, still staring at where Lucy had been standing. He slowly raised his hand to his cheek where she'd kissed him and shook his head slightly.

He then got to his feet and left the café. Outside in the afternoon sun he made his way along the street thinking about what Lucy had said and by the time he'd reached his apartment he had made a decision and thought he knew it would be painful at first, in the long run he'd be happier and he knew that Lucy had been right; he still needed time but when he was ready, she'd be there.
