Ghosts, strange creatures, danger and stress. That was life as Kimihiro Watanuki's friend in a nutshell.
Doumeki had always thought growing up in a shrine with an exorcist grandfather brought with it his fair share of unusual things. But that was before he met Watanuki. Before he met the boy's boss, Yuko. Before he got tangled up in the things that those two saw every day.
He supposed that he'd always had a choice in whether or not he should put up with all of the strange things. That choice probaly even remained now. But even if it did, he supposed by now if he did choose to have nothing to do with Yuko or Watanuki, he was too involved. Too caught up in that world.
In the begining, maybe it was curiousity. Maybe it was boredom. Maybe it was, as Yuko was always saying, Hitsuzen. But whatever it was, he was drawn in, starting with the Angel-San incident. It had ended with Doumeki sporting a broken arm. And with Watanuki begrudgingly fixing Doumeki's lunches for the week as a thankyou for his help.
After that, it seemed he was stuck. He couldn't back out. And he was okay with that. He couldn't imagine going back to his old life now. That life devoid of spirits and monsters and home-made lunches. He'd even miss Watanuki, though that seemed an insane thing to admit considering the treatment he got from the ghost magnet.
Things continued to get stranger and stranger as days went by. By now, Doumeki was truely trapped. Connected to Watanuki through a shared eye and blood. Things given willingly to keep the boy alive. Proof that Doumeki cared.
Watanuki would rather believe Doumeki's reason for saving him was due to the lunches he made. But Doumeki wasn't a fool. He wouldn't risk his life time after time just to get food. There was something more at stake. If Watanuki wouldn't care for his own life, Doumeki would do it for him. Maybe Yuko planned that.
She constantly commented that Watanuki was important and he needed to survive. For all Doumeki knew, he was a scapegoat in her plans. Merely there to keep Watanuki alive until he was needed. At that point, maybe Doumeki would be discarded. Perhaps after his usefullness had run out, he would be left behind.
He wondered if Watanuki realized this too. If that was why he distanced himself. Why he yelled and screamed and waved his arms around. Maybe he knew Doumeki was a temporary fixture in his life. A friend who one day, just wouldn't be there anymore. Not dead. Just gone.
Maybe Watanuki would be the one who would dissapear one day.
Ghosts, strange creatures, danger and stress. That was life as Kimihiro Watanuki's friend in a nutshell. But really, that kind of life was just fine by him.
