A door slammed loudly. Something shattered. The sound brought pricks to hearts that heard. Any mother would know what that meant. A wail like no other rose from downstairs, and footsteps; loud and heart-broken; rambled up the stairs. A daughter's first heart-break. Joe's mother sighed. By the sound of it, she needed a few more hours. She heard the door open and close again, a lot more gently at that.
"What happened?!" She heard Joe ask, astounded. "Your favorite vase is broken!" He exclaimed. She took an intake of breath. Oh, dear. That wasn't good.
"Anna's boyfriend broke up with her. I can just tell." She went back to her dishes, and looked at the clock. She would go and talk to her at 6.
But that definitely wasn't Joe's plan. He knew this idiot was just going to be trouble for his 13 year old sister. Oh, how he wanted to go and beat the snot out of him! Instead, he decided to go and talk to her.
Joe knocked gently on her door. He heard a thump against the wall, and a sobbing 'Go away.' Joe opened the door anyways. Inside was a complete mess. Her lamp was knocked over, and still lit. Pillows and stuffed animals were strewn everywhere, her pictures were thrown in the trash messily, and she had ripped up all the posters that used to be on her light pink walls. Joe carefully walked through the dump, and sat himself gingerly on her bed.
"Anna…"
"He cheated on me. He cheated on me with blonde little Rebecca Polander!" She interrupted sadly. She flopped down. "I should've known! God, I'm an idiot!" She yelled, throwing a stuffed lady bug across the room. It hit the wall with a thump, and fell to the ground with its other abused friends.
"Anna, who cares? He wasn't anything special. Just another boy."
"But, if that's true, then Jade is just another girl." Anna shot back. Joe flinched. He would never think of Jade that way. Never. He understood how she felt.
"Anna, but here is the difference. Jade hasn't cheated on me, and she's still here. That doesn't mean she will always be, but it does mean that life goes on. I couldn't imagine life without Jade, but someday I might have to. That's the thing: You have to get over it." He looked at his little sister and sighed. She looked around, and sighed too.
"But… I don't know how." Anna's eyes began to tear up, and soon a steady line of tears went down her cheeks.
"You'll figure it out Anna. You always do. It's different for everyone." Joe leaned over and hugged Anna. "You'll figure it out." With that, Joe left, leaving Anna alone in her room. Anna looked around. She stood up and began to clean up her room. As she was working, she stumbled upon a picture of her and her old boyfriend. Instead of throwing it away like she wanted to do, she put it on her desk. Then, she saw her radio. There was still a CD in it, so she began to play it. She smiled slightly when she realized it was her favorite song. Anna hummed as she worked, and soon, she was singing along.
In an hour's time, Anna's room was nice and tidy, and Anna was happy. She looked around her room, and found another CD to play. She sang along to that too. She was singing when her mother came in.
"Anna, are you ok?" She asked worriedly. Anna laughed, and danced around the room.
"Just fine mom!" She suddenly went and hugged her. Anna laughed again, and danced around some more. Confused, her mom walked out.
Anna flopped back down on her bed, exhausted, but happy.
"That's how the cookie crumbles." She sighed, then fell asleep.
