Abeyance

I am the whisper in the night,
The noise beyond your door,
Sly, disturbing echo
Of what has gone before.

I am the stranger on the road,
You do not care to meet,
The tread upon the board,
The sound of creeping feet.

I am the watcher in the wood,
The howler in the storm,
Hoar frost in the winter,
The death of the unborn.

I am the pain of an old wound,
That never seems to ease.
A crippling terror,
A withering disease.

I am your fear of what has passed,
And may yet rise anew.
Iron king of ages gone,
One they believed they slew.

My kingdom lost, my crown brought low,
They ravaged my domain.
Vengence I will serve, when
The Shadow comes again.
