I ran through the forest, not knowing where my paws were taking me. My heart was broken, and I was alone…again. She left-no, I left. I had no choice!
Then why do I feel like I want to die?
Shaking my head, I continued. I realized that I was near the lakeshore, and slowed to a stop. What do I do, what do I do…
I whimpered in grief. I would never see her again, never feel her soft pelt against mine, and never hear her voice again. I would have died, but I know that even then I couldn't be with her. It was utter torture…
Then I realized that I could be with her. I knew what to do, but it would have to wait. I headed back to the Clan.
I heard my apprentice look up at me at the Moonpool. I said the words that I rehearsed a hundred times.
"I, Jayfeather, medicine cat of Thunderclan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of a medicine cat,and with your help she will serve his Clan for many moons."
I look at the kit of my brother.
"Lightpaw, do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to stand apart from rivalry between
Clan and Clan, and to protect all cats equally, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do." She answered.
"Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your true name as a medicine cat. Lightpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Lightspirit. StarClan honors your skill and your kindness, and we welcome you as a full medicine cat."
" Lightspirit! Lightspirit!" the other medicine cats cheered. Time for phase two… I slipped into her dreams.
"Lightspirit."
"Huh? Jayfeather? Why are you- "
"Lightspirit, when you wake up, you'll see I am gone. You are the full medicine cat. May Starclan light your path and spirit- don't forget me. "
With that I woke up. I looked at the Moonpool. Goodbye…
I ran.
I ran to the tunnels. I went inside, went to the cavern where Rock stood, went to the dark river. I took a last breath.
I jumped. Fell. Flew. I stayed underwater until death came from me, and smiled.
Half Moon? Are you there?
I saw her, saw her eyes, her smile. "I was always there."
She is worth the sacrifice. Thank you... Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, Leafpool, Thunderclan... that was my life.
But this is where I belong.
