Music is LifeBy Makayla Hodge
It's everywhere you go. It has a huge influence on teenagers. Music. There's pop, rock, rap, country, and many more. Music can save lives. Some adults would try to argue this. Music can be helpful and give you strength. Music is life.
Life without music seems impossible to imagine. Most teens feel lost without music. Music can do many things for us. It can normalize abnormal feelings. Music can be used to express emotions in a way that art and behavior can't. In the teen years music is normally used as an escape. Teens will try to find songs with lyrics that best identify with the situation they are in. When teens are struggling with issues like; depression, bipolar disorder, self-harm, and eating disorders, music can be used to identify the emotions that try are feeling. Music can help you deal with troubling times in life.
Life happens but it isn't always sunshine and rainbows. Things like the death of a loved one or a bad break up and even depression can make life really hard for teenagers. Feelings like anxiety, depression, and stress create an unsettling and chaotic mood in the brain. This mood can weaken a person's ability to reason and makes it harder to preform everyday tasks. This is because of a reduction of serotonin levels. A way that a lot of teens cope with this is by playing or listening to music. Some teen repress their emotions which is often unhealthy and music helps teens release the emotions they hold in. Music gives you strength when you feel like every day is a battle.
Music is there when nobody else is. It can make you feel like you're not alone and that somebody in the world understands how you feel. Music is also used in therapy. They use music to help treat depression, ADD, seizures, premature infancy, and insomnia. Music can also be positive for mental health.
I asked ten of my friends, ages 12-21 some questions. The first question I asked was 'In your opinion does music save lives?' All ten of them said yes. I also asked them another question. I ask if they had anything else to say about the effects of music on life, here are a few of the answers I received.
"Music restores hope." Age 14
"Without music my life would have ended. I use music to express my feelings and use it to feel better and to make myself feel worse. Music saved my life. Music is the words I can't speak." Age 17
"All I can say is music makes my life 9000 times better." Age 12
"Music defines our emotions. Promotes creativity and acts as an anti-depressant. Helps us express the way we feel, and our actions sometimes." Age 21
From my own experience I would have to say that music is my best friend and has saved my life.
Music seems to be the thing that teenage life revolves around. Music saves lives. Music can make us stronger and help us through the rough patches in life. Music makes the world go 'round.
