Come Back
The raven-haired girl opened her eyes. She looks around, wondering what she's doing back home and not in the cave. It's been a long time since she's took a step into her own house but not much has changed. It still smells of pine and lavender, a comforting scent. The walls are still of a sky blue colour donned with family portraits. Her heart aches when she stares at the pictures, she misses them so dearly.
It's quite obvious she can never see her mother again. And as much as that pains her, she's had several years to deal with that. On the other hand, that can't be said regarding her father. One minute he's there and the next, he's gone. And it's all her fault. She brought this upon herself; he's gone because of her.
She can't fight back the tears. She just can't. And she hates herself for yet again trying to look on the bright side. It's clear there isn't one in this case. Being optimistic has a price: naivety and stupidity. She sobs as she scans the room, her vision getting blurrier by the second.
That doesn't stop her from getting flashbacks though. Memories of his cooking efforts (cooking definitely wasn't his forte), late night snacks, awkward fatherly advice, sneaking out and practically every other wonderful moment. She really took it for granted. She smiles thinking back but then she realises that she won't get to experience them anymore. She's all alone now. He was the only family she had.
She sighs, looking around just made her even sadder. Then she hears it. She can recognise the voice anywhere, anytime.
"Zatanna? Why don't you help me put bac- Zatanna? Are you crying?"
"Dad? What-what are you doing h-here?" She stutters. She's so confused and she can't believe her ears. She turns around to see her father with a concerned expression. She was expecting her mind to be playing a trick on her.
"Why wouldn't I be here?"
The young magician shakes her head, this is way too much for her. Nonetheless, she hugs him immediately. She expected him to be somewhat untouchable, like an image or a hologram. But she's pleasantly surprised to actually feel his embrace. She feels his warmth, which sends her a sense of security. It's as if he's that bright light at the end of a tunnel.
"I love you, dad," She cries. "I've missed you so much. It's been so hard without you."
"I love you too. No matter what, I'll always love you."
The raven-haired girl opened her eyes. She looks around her room at the cave, frowns and sighs when her eyes lay on the cluttered mess on her desk. I really ought to clean up.
She hums as she makes her way to the bathroom, trying to recall her dream. It had all seemed so familiar and real yet she couldn't put a finger on it. She passes by Wally's souvenirs and glances at the empty spot. The space previously occupied by the Helmet of Fate.
And that's when it hits her.
