HE NEVER IMAGINED she would wear a lace wedding dress. A dress that dragged on and on. Brick Jojo sipped his coffee, his eyes trained on a thin figure draped in all-white. It was obvious that she was a bride, the extravagant dress told it all. But what didn't add up was the lack of luggage and the soft sniffles. His eyes never left the figure, watching as she ordered her coffee.
She turned and took a seat on the couch, her dress taking up a good portion of the couch. Blossom Utonium buried her hands into the skirt of her dress and weakly looked around. Brick was sure to avert his gaze when she turned his way. When he looks up, a pink gaze burns into his soul. It was too late to avoid her. He stood up and smoothed over his suit, which was a real pain in the ass. With a purpose he didn't know he had, Brick walked over. "Hey Bloss."
She matches his gaze. It was just like the last time they spoke. Except this time, they were 26 and not 15. "Brick." She makes a little bit of space for him, barely enough. When he sits down, it is obvious that he's sitting on her dress. There's a silence. She bites her pink lip, fiddling with the ring on her finger. "How is it with Princess?"
The name hurts him. She pretends not to notice his flinch. His eyes burn with an emotion she can't decipher. "We broke up. A little birdie told me she married that Mitch guy." Blossom gave a short laugh. He didn't blame her. It was hard to believe that a primadonna like Princess married a slacker like Mitch. He lets a silence fall upon them, his eyes set on Blossom as she pulls on the jeweled veil sitting atop her mass of auburn curls. "How about you?"
Blossom sucks in a breath. "I got engaged to Dexter about two years ago. My wedding was today. I left him at the altar." There is an interruption as the barista calls out Blossom's name. She quickly gets her coffee, tripping over her dress. He wonders if she's wearing heels. She was never the type for heels. He gets a moment of silence before Blossom comes back, armed with a drink and a story. He watches as she shifts, her exposed skin glistening under the dim lights of Starbucks.
"Where are you headed?" The question is simple but Blossom takes a century to answer. She gives him another look and the past is flashing back at him. Their stolen kisses and lingering. The rushed excuses and undone buttons. Brick gives a heavy sigh and throws his coffee away. The sight of Blossom was a good enough subsitute for coffee.
"Hopefully to a better future."
"I'm going to California for my job." She gives a smile and Brick suddenly sees his future with Blossom. One where he trades a smile with her from across the altar. One with tiny kids with his eyes and her hair. He shakes his head and checks his watch. A disappointment runs through him as he sees the time. He bids her a farewell and turns to walk away when she stops him.
"Brick, wait!" She runs to him. He grips his briefcase tightly. He watches as she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. "See you in California." His heart nearly beats out of his chest. Brick just gave another smile. Blossom looked around before giving him one last gift. A peck on the cheek.
