Annabeth gasped and stumbled.
"What is it?" Percy asked.
She tried to stagger toward the ladder. Why was she moving backwards? Percy thought. That isn't right.
All of a sudden, her legs swept out from under her and she fell on her face.
"Her ankle!" Hazel shouted from the ladder. "Cut it! Cut it!"
Percy was so confused. He couldn't process anything that's happening right now. Cut her ankle?
Then it all made sense, but it was too late. Something dragged Annabeth toward the pit. Percy did the only thing that came to mind, and lunged for her. But it was too late.
The next thing he sees is Annabeth's pained face, trying to get out of the chasm. But the web was too strong.
"Percy," Annabeth gasped. "Meet me...doors of death..." And with that, she let go.
"Annabeth!" Percy cried. He jumped in, but something was holding him back. Hot tears streamed down his face.
'Not yet, child,' the voice said in a sickeningly sweet way. 'I quite enjoy your suffering.'
The next thing Percy heard was Annabeth's screams as darkness washed over him.
Percy gasped as he woke up, beads of sweat trickling down his forehead and bare chest. He cannot let anything like that happen to Annabeth. He'd prefer it to be him in the chasm, fighting off monsters that will eventually wear him down, as long as she was safe.
He needed to see her. To know she was okay.
Percy got off his bed and silently walked towards the Athena cabin. The door creaked ever so slightly as he turned the knob, hoping no one was inside. Tears and sweat still clung to his forehead and cheeks, but it didn't matter. All he needed to see was Annabeth.
So it most certainly scared him when he saw that she wasn't there.
