The night sky was a fascinatingly beautiful black. His eyes couldn't help but be irresistibly drawn over his head; completely captivated by the black expanse that shone with countless stars blinking and sparkling like tiny diamonds sewn on black velvet. He smiled in great content as he stared at the sky.

It was truly perfect for the last night of the year.

A wonderfully life-altering year.

A year he could never forget because of how much he had unexpectedly gained as well as lost. He had gained many precious things. Things that he would never let go of again. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't. Not ever.

It was all because of her. It was all because of her that he was standing outside just five minutes before midnight welcoming the next year with new promises and resolutions in his heart.

The past year had been eventful to say the least. Full of ups and downs accompanied with a rollercoaster of emotions. He had met new people, had interesting encounters, experienced many different things, in short; made some truly great memories.

Yet, he had also broken free from demons of the past, had battled with his inner conflicts, had tried to figure out what he truly desired with sometimes, heart wrenching pain.

What should he choose?

What should he do?

What did he want?

Soccer or Piano?

He had tried to figure it all out and all this, had been triggered by her.

Only you can truly close the door to your own path. Where one door closes another opens...

It was all because of her.

The girl who had unwittingly slipped into his heart like water slipping into cracks in the ground. Likewise, it was surprising how, like clear spring water washes and revitalises a plant to thrive anew, she seemed to have so effortlessly washed away his insecurities and pain with her own determination and courage. Meeting her had been a beginning he had never thought of.

That was not all.

Despite himself, the feelings she instilled in him regarding her and regarding the piano were like she had lit a small flame in his heart. A flame that warmed him like nothing else did. The flame that, she awakened anew within him for the piano. The enjoyment and pleasure he used to feel while he played the piano as a child, he had gained a hold of it again because of her and henceforth whenever he would play, that flame would flare into the fire that would fuel his determination over and over to keep playing the piano. To never let it go again because she was there.

He was jerked out of his thoughts as he saw multiple fireworks burst into an array of light and colour sprinkling the night sky with a new assortment of multi-coloured stars. He smiled with rare delight at the display.

The New Year had begun.

He stood there watching as more and more fireworks lit the sky and vowed: 'I will persevere and continue on the path I have finally chosen no matter what obstacles may come my way just as she was doing so. I will always be there for her, I will tell her my feelings and we will continue with all our might to walk the same path together and hopefully, at this time next year, both of us will be standing here to welcome the next year and the many others that will come after that...'
