A/N: Inspired by the cover of chapter 16 - it's such a sad image.
There was a consensus among Team 7 that Sakura had been the one to come up with the idea to take a team photo.
She had set up everything with the photographer and chosen the place where the picture should be taken - in the training field, by the logs Naruto had been tied to during their first test as a team - and if not for her enthusiasm, the other members of Team 7 would have probably forgotten all about it, tradition be damned. (In truth, at the time, she didn't really care about Team 7. She just wanted a photo of her with Sasuke.)
Naruto had thought it a good idea and had even forgone his usual pranks. (He craved any connection he could find with others - he'd cherish the proof that he had four now.)
Sasuke sort of showed up to take the photo and disappeared not a minute afterwards. (Photos were stupid things that did nothing to help in one's goal. Plus, Naruto and Sakura were being annoying again.)
There had been much arguing as the photographer told them to stand still, but in the end Sakura had gotten her photo, and Naruto something to put on his bedside table. Even Sasuke didn't toss it to the trash when he got his copy and left it somewhere beneath piles of scrolls and clothes.
However, Sakura, Naruto and Sasuke often forgot about the fourth element that had been present when they recounted the events of that day. Kakashi had kept quiet and unnoticed throughout. He'd unobtrusively pushed Sakura to the front ( "she's the smallest" ) and when Naruto and Sasuke wouldn't shut up long enough for the photographer to work, he'd casually placed a hand atop each of their heads and directed their heads forward, standing with Sakura in the middle ( "Sasuke, go to the right" ).
By the time Sakura had handed him his copy, everyone had forgotten that he had been the first to suggest that they take a photo (Sakura had pounced on the idea like a starving bird of prey), but that was fine by him. He felt... something, every time he woke up and looked at both his team photos sitting one beside the other.
Minato-sensei had been so much taller than them that he'd had to rest his hands on top of his and Obito's heads to lean forward. The Uchiha wasn't glaring at his teammates there, and Rin looked so vibrant and happy that it was hard to remember that the three of them were still having some trouble getting along at that time.
The adult Kakashi had no idea what to do with a team of his own, especially one that was as loud and uncooperant as his - he barely knew what to do with himself. But he figured that if he kept carbon-copying his teacher's example, things should be fine.
(For all his genius, it never crossed his mind that maybe the more mutinous faces of the new Team 7 were indicative that some differences were needed this time round.)
