As Kate Beckett rounded the corner of the bull pen, she could see her boyfriend Josh sitting on the edge of her desk. She let out a small groan at the thought of having to deal with him right now. She knew it wasn't fair to always put her work before her relationships but that's what worked for her. Josh, Tom, hell even Will all did the same so why couldn't she?
But lately Josh has been acting different. Ever since he had returned from Africa, all he talks about is spending time together whether it's going out or just sitting in their apartments. Normally Kate didn't mind but she needed some alone time especially after everything she learned with her mother's case and she knew Josh was smart. He was going to start seeing through her excuses soon. She was almost to her desk when he looked up at her.
"Josh, what are you doing here?" Kate threw out as she dropped some files on her desk. Josh began explaining his unannounced visit but all Kate could focus on was the strange feeling deep in her chest. Josh is her boyfriend and yet he is producing this feeling within her. This isn't how it's supposed to be. Her mind tuned in to catch the last bit of what he was saying.
"I'm sorry, what?"
Josh just smiled and took her hands in his. "I was saying that we should go away this weekend."
Kate immediately took her hands out of his. "Josh I just can't go away for a weekend. I have cases and people depending on me. What do you want me to do just dump them on Ryan and Esposito and hope for the best?"
Josh was shocked to say the least and tried to calm Kate down. "That's not what I was implying. It's just you work so hard I thought you could use a break."
"What I could use is a solid lead," Beckett muttered before running a hand through her hair. "I can't walk away from this case. I'm right in the middle of it."
"And there's another one," Josh let out a sigh. "Kate, I'm not sure how much longer I can continue doing this. Before I went away I thought we were doing alright. But ever since I've gotten back you hardly want to be near me. I've got to know if you really want this. If you really want us."
Kate looked at him and wanted to say yes. "I'm sorry Josh."
"There's my answer," Josh stood up. "I don't think you were ever really in love with me. I think you were in love with the idea of me. But you know what Kate, I wouldn't go back and change a thing. We had some good times together."
Kate nodded her but her eyes remained focused on a spot on the floor.
"Take care Kate," Josh whispered as he kissed the top of her head before walking away. Kate could feel tears starting to prick the backs of her eyes. It wasn't supposed to go like this but she couldn't keep stringing Josh along. It wasn't fair to him. She saw him turn out of the corner of her eye.
"I hope you find someone who makes you happy." And with that Josh walked out of the precinct. Kate bit the inside of her lip as she looked in the opposite direction aware that there were more footsteps approaching. Seeing the take-out cup filled with her favorite latte, Kate let out a small smile.
"So where are we at?" Castle asked as he sat down in his chair and Kate was internally thankful that he didn't ask what happened with Dr. Motorcycle Boy.
