He's Left Now.
Kurt stood there. His eyes were red from the days of crying and the cold stung his tear-dampened cheeks. The emotional exhaustion was worse than the physical exhaustion; he hadn't slept since Blaine had died. Eva was with him to, standing there alongside Cooper. They were holding her hand on either side, just trying to make the sea of people dressed in black a little less ominous.
"Dada?" she caught Kurt's attention by tugging on the hem of his blazer. He had sewed the Dalton crest on to the inside; a constant reminder of where they first met. Kurt swallowed down tears and fear, not quite ready for what his daughter was going to ask. She had a habit of throwing him into questions that he had to guess his way through, for her sake.
"Sweetie, what's up?" He finally answered, pulling her into his hip. She rested there for a bit, not speaking and just thinking. "Go on honey" Cooper coaxed from her other side.
"Daddy had a show to do, if they put him in the ground while he's sleeping, he won't be able to do it!" she looked so confused at the new detail that she had figured out. How was Kurt supposed to explain that her father was not asleep; he was dead. "Dada?" She pressed on tugging his blazer a little harder.
"Sweetheart, some people go into a sleep so deep that they won't wake up" he started slow "Those people go to...angels" Kurt's guts wrenched when he saw his little girl's face fall at that prospect. She must have thought that Blaine was going to wake up. She shook her head, looking angry and upset.
"Dada, lift me up!" she said, worrying Kurt about her intentions, but he did it anyway. "Daddy, wake up!" she yelled, her voice wasn't loud enough to distract people from their various conversations. Kurt felt like his world was collapsing. He pulled Eva to his chest and tried to comfort her.
"Baby, I'm so sorry." He didn't know what he was apologising for. He just didn't know. Cooper was crying silently besides them, shielding his face from Eva so she didn't see any weakness. The funeral was starting though. It was all happening now.
"If any family members would like to say their final goodbyes, feel free to do so now" The vicar's voices stayed solemn and caring throughout everything she said, Kurt wondered how she did it because she had known Blaine. Even Karofsky (Yes, even he turned up) was crying through this.
"Do you want to go and see Daddy one last time?" Cooper asked soothingly. He had perfected the gentle 'paediatrician voice' throughout his career. She just nodded and they made their way through the crowd. People were letting them past because they knew just how close they were. Eva went ahead; despite the pitiful eyes all directed at her and put a hand on her Daddy's.
"Daddy, they haven't buried you yet, it's not too late to wake up!" she said shakily, the tears rolling down her cheek. Cooper and Kurt both put a hand on her shoulder. "But Daddy, you said you'd try not to go to sleep again!" She sobbed becoming more hysterical, and then she turned straight to the vicar. "He had a show next month, now he can't do it" her voice was broken, empty and it had already brought Kurt into tears that shook his lithe frame like earthquakes. Cooper picked her up, rocked her and walked her away.
"Baby, you did well, better than anyone" Kurt whispered, before kissing him on the forehead for the last time.
"Goodnight honey" Kurt whispered into Eva's hair. She just nodded, still sobbing. Kurt remembered the note that Blaine had given him the day before he died. "Oh, sweetie, this is for you." He handed her the note and waited in the doorway as she began to read:
Dear Eva,
Your Daddy's safe with us...
