Of Sappho
Summary: Felicity and Pippa discuss Sappho, and the love of women. Fee/Pip pre-slash.
A/n: This is so my new favorite pairing. Needs a name, though. I mean, if there's Karma, why can't we have… I dunno, Fippa? Or maybe there is a name for it and I just don't know what it is…

The four of them snuck quietly back to Spence, taking care not to leave wet footprints.
"It would make a fine mess if things if Brigid saw them," Felicity said quietly as they approached the building. "Are we dry enough?"
"I th-think so," Pippa said with a shiver. "Hurry up, would you? I'm freezing! Why we ever went into that stupid lake-"
"It was hot out before we went in," Gemma observed. "And still is. We're just cold."
Pippa shot her a dirty look, though the other girl didn't notice. "So nice to have a voice of reason, Miss Doyle," she said sarcastically.
Gemma pursed her lips, but said nothing.
They quietly made their way inside and up the stairs. They separated wordlessly, Fee and Pip going inside their room while Gemma and Ann continued on to the end of the hall.
They removed their damp clothes and changed into their nightgowns, then crawled gratefully into bed.
"Fee?" Pip asked after a while, their conversation from the caves running through her head. "Who was Sappho?"
"I told you," Felicity replied. "She was a poet."
"And did she really- with other women?"
"So they say."
Pippa was silent for a moment. "How do they… well- you know? And why do they?"
Fee grinned into the darkness. How unlike her friend to ask such an inquisitive question about something so improper! "Have you heard of Sodomites?" she inquired. "Men who love other men?"
"Yes," Pippa said, reluctantly. "But they're different, aren't they? I mean, they can… they have… oh, you know full well what I mean!" she concluded angrily as Fee began to giggle.
"Yes, yes, I know."
"But they… I mean, the- the Sodomites- oh, don't laugh! They- men, I mean- like that sort of thing. I mean; they get pleasure from it, whether they're with a woman, or… someone else. But women- we just sort of have to bear it, don't we? Lie back and think of England. There isn't pleasure in it."
"Maybe that's why the Sapphists do it, then," Fee replied softly. "Because men will only hurt us."
"Then- do you think it's different than being with a man?"
"Obviously," Fee laughed.
"Oh, shush! I mean… do you think that it's sweet, and loving, and…"
"I think it must be marvelous," Fee said with a quiet passion.
"Fee!" Pip squealed, scandalized.
Felicity didn't care. "Oh, do be quiet," she said, turning away from her friend.
Pippa lay there in the darkness for a long time, Fee's words repeating in her head.
I think it must be marvelous.
