My Shepard's armour was black; I just decided randomly to write this as a bit of fun, wondering what Shep would think of everyone changing clothes.

Disclaimer: Sadly, nothing is mine.

Black

When Miranda changed into black after they'd rescued Oriana, she didn't think much of it. No doubt she'd just wanted to change. After all, it wasn't illegal for a woman to have fashion preferences. Even she liked to change what she wore every now and again.

Then Jacob followed suit after she'd dealt with his crazy father. Again, she didn't think much of it. He was his own man, allowed to do what he wanted.

After the crazy situation that had her exiled from the flotilla, Tali too turned her suit black. She was starting to get suspicious now. This was too much to be a coincidence. When she asked, however, Tali just said it made for better camouflage and she let it go.

When Thane changed into black after they'd stopped his son from killing that damned turian xenophobe (though she had dearly wanted to kill him for his anti-human campaign), she was definitely suspicious. What was it with these people and black? Sure, she had black armour, but none of them had before. She'd always had black armour.

Sidonis was dead, his squad avenged- and now Garrus was wearing that damnable black too. Something was definitely going on here. She cornered him and he stammered out something about having calibrations to do. She left unsatisfied.

Then even Grunt got in on the act. His old armour was perfectly good- and she checked the stats, and his new armour was identical to the old. Except that it was black. She couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting someone in black anymore. And she'd been so unique before.

Then Mordin's formerly white lab coat inexplicably gained black highlights after they'd dealt with his 'captured' former squad mate and she was now officially fed up about not being in the loop. This was her ship, dammit! And even it wouldn't tell her. When she'd asked, all EDI had to say was that she was "uncertain as to the motives of the crew" though the situation was becoming "interesting."

Interesting. Huh.

Kelly smiled at her in a way that made her forget her question whenever she asked. Whatever else she was, that girl was damned smart. Too damned smart for her own good. For her own sanity, she chose to ignore all the black. She wasn't about to change, dammit! It felt like admitting something, compromising. Her armour had always been black- in the Alliance, as a Spectre- and she was not going to change that for Cerberus. Nuh uh. No way. She could deal with a little discomfort.

Even Jack ended up in black. She hadn't asked her why- she was scared shitless of Jack- and she hadn't offered an explanation. Not that she'd expected her to. Jack rarely explained anything.

Samara at least had the decency to tell her that it only seemed right to commission a new black (and equally revealing) suit since the rest of the crew was wearing one. Finally it twigged- for someone supposedly smart, she was rather dull at times, she thought.

They were changing into a uniform. Modelling it after her. She was flattered- after all, she hadn't asked for their loyalty, she just wanted to help them- but still annoyed. Black armour was her providence, after all. It always had been. She wasn't unique anymore. But she was still flattered.

After she acquired a geth of all things for her crew, and helped him by reprogramming the heretics, a decision of which the morality still twinged at her, she turned wearily to him.

"You not going to paint yourself black too, are you?" she asked.

The next time she was in the AI core, the now-black Legion refused to meet her eyes.
