The racers rounded a corner quickly, the cars titling on their wheels and gaining momentum, giving each who had done it perfectly a short burst of speed. Mario pulled ahead, he could see the finish line down the home stretch, hear the people cheering as they approached it quickly, and smiled. He pushed the gas petal down hard until it was flat on the floor and his car gained speed, putting even more distance between him and the other racers. This was it, he thought, but his congratulations were short lived when he saw green speed past him. It was his brother Luigi, who he was certain was knocked out of the race when his car skidded off after running over a banana peel. He even watched as his brother's car collided with the wall, yet here he was challenging Mario's dominance. A burst of anger krept into the shorter man's eyes. How dare he. Who did he think he was? He had been hanging onto a red shell most of the race in case anyone was dumb enough to try to pass him. The others got the message, but Luigi was apparently dumb and full of misled courage. Fifty feet and the face was over, he had to make his move now in order to win the golden cup. Not that that would surprise anyone, he always won and stepped on anyone else who tried. That's the kind of man he was.
Luigi was directly in front of him, a bad mistake, waving victoriously to crowd. How dare he even think for a moment to steal Mario's fame and glory. The plump man got ready, aimed... And threw the red shell. It sped along the course at an amazing speed, right toward it's target, catching up with him easily.
Mario's plans were thwarted when he realized Luigi wasn't as dumb as he pretended to be. He had been carrying bananas the whole time, and as the red shell approached he held one out behind him, and the shell collided with that instead. That stopped the shell dead in it's tracks while Luigi continued to speed ahead.
And crossed the finish line. The crowd exploded into applause, a number of them looked stunned. Someone had finally mustered up enough courage to beat Mario? That was practically unheard of, but the crowd of toads absolutely loved it. Luigi stepped out of his car, grinning ear to ear as he waved to the crowds. It seemed like he could hardly believe it either.
Mario easily got second, although no one seemed to notice, there was too much excitement going on. The others dutifully came in behind him, one by one, all stunned into silence as they waited to see what the power hungry plumber was going to do. The last person who even dared do something like that disappeared. Knowing Mario, the same thing was bound to happen here, but this time there was something different. It was his brother. And while he stole most of Luigi's spotlight and made sure the older brother felt unworthy and inferior, a small crowd of people had begun to take a liking to the dolt. This became a problem when the small crowd steadily grew in size and began to threaten Mario's fame. Now people cheered for Luigi. And while Mario was tolerant before, this was a step out of line.
