five year old Fred and George

Georges POV

"And then he killed them!" Charlie shouted, finishing his scary ghost story.

I looked towards my brother Fred and saw him trembling and looking around the room terrified.

"But it's just a story right?" I asked trying to comfort Fred.

"That's what you think…" Charlies voice trailed off eerily before walking away.

Later that night George lay awake in his bed, listening to the sounds of Fred toss and turn in the bed next to him. Suddenly Fred screamed out in terror and sat bolt up right.

"Georgie…" a small voice called out to me.

"Yesh Freddie?" I asked. Looking acorss the the bed next to me where I saw Fred rocking back and forth, holding his knee's tightly curled up into a ball.

"I'm sc-sc-ar-ed…" He stuttered, tears began to streak his cheeks.

"Do you want to sleep with me?" I asked as I moved over allowing space for Fred to lie. Fred didn't answer he just crawled silently into the bed. Fred snuggled up next to me as I reached for his hand.

"There's nothing to be scared of Freddie…" I told him as I hugged him tightly.

"But what if the ghost comes and kills me!" He shreaked in terror.

"It's just a story" I told him, gently brushing the hair away from his eyes like mummy does.

"But Charlie said it's true!" Fred muttered defientley.

"Look," I paused, "If anything tries to hurt you I'll protect you I pwomise, I pwomise I'll always keep you safe"

"Pwomise…?" Fred asked me as I stared into his big blue eyes.

"Yeah…" I mumbled as we dirfted off to sleep, still in each others arms.

14 years later

I stared down towards the smooth grey surface of the tombstone.

"I'm sorry Fred…" I choked on the words as another sob racked through my body. "I'm sorry I couldn't keep you safe… I'm sorry I let him hurt you…"

Tears began to stream down my cheeks as I reached towards the tomb. "But you said we'd always be together, if one of us was gone the other one was…" I broke down in tears, falling to my knees before the grave as I felt another wave of pain ripple through my body. "You left me here all alone! How could you…? You know I can't live here without you… I miss you Freddie…" My voice trailed off as my fingers brushed against the cold grey grave, and I remembered Fred's still body lying there in school, so peaceful as if he was just sleeping.

But no it was more than that, I could feel it… When that killing curse struck his body, when he fell to the ground, when he left this world… It all happened so quickly and I would've given anything, anything at all for that of been me instead of Fred.

"I promised you I'd protect you… I'm so sorry…" I mumbled before getting up and walking away.

I turned around one more time to face the grave. "But I swear to you Fred… You won't be alone for long, I'll join you… I promise.
