My What Might Have Been.

Chapter One: My What Might Have Been.

The sound of children running and playing could be heard, echoing around the school. He watched as a girl chased a ball across the cement, happily laughing with an innocence a child could possess. She had brown hair that fell down her back in a long plait and brown eyes that sparkled. He had seen her on his previous trips to the school. But she wasn't the one he was watching for.

The one he waited for had shoulder length blonde hair, with blue eyes that lit up a room whenever she entered it. The one he waited for was so much like her mother in both looks and personality that sometimes he thought it was like being around a miniature clone.

His eyes cast through the crowd of children again. Where was she? If she wasn't here soon she'd be late. He looked for her blonde hair among the girls.

Bye Mommy! Have fun at work!

There! Her voice. He wrenched his head to the right, already looking for her. She was running up towards him, a blue backpack swinging off one shoulder.

Erin! Come back, you forgot your lunch!

Oh God. There she was, just getting out of a green coloured four-wheel drive. Erin's mother. Damn. With one more stolen glance he moved away from the school gate and over to his truck. He as still fumbling with the keys when he knew she was behind him. But he wouldn't turn around.

Damn it. She had to say something didn't she. He turned around to face her.

Sam Carter stood in front of him biting her lip before serving him a look. There were too many emotions in her look for it to be called one type of look.

What are you doing here Jack?

Just taking a drive.

And you happened to stop at Erin's school? Don't. Don't lie. She's told me about you being here.

He sighed.

Recognised me, did she?

Sam allowed a slight smile to cross her face.

Yeah. She did. The smile was soon replaced with a frown. You do know that she'd not yours? I wasn't lying when I told you that.

Now it was his turn to smile.

I know that Sam. I never once thought that she was. He paused. Okay, maybe once. But I never doubted your word.

Then why are you here Jack?

The bell rang. He turned to watch Erin's distant form join the throng of students entering the building.

Cause she's My What Might Have Been. My what have been mine if I wasn't such a jackass.

you were the one who decided that we couldn't be together and work together. You broke up with me.

I know. That's why I was a jackass. I don't want to freak her out or anything it's just, seeing her helps.

Sam nodded at him. With one last look she turned to walk away.

She didn't bother turning around, which he was grateful for. If she had, then his nerve would have probably failed.

Do you have any what might have beens?

She'd your what might have been Jack. She's my regret.

End.
