"Look, there he is!"

Severus felt a sharp poke in his ribs in conjunction with Narcissa's whisper. He heard her sigh and could see without watching the way her eyes followed the older boy as he approached their hiding place along the corridor. He heard shuffling and knew she was straightening her skirt and robes and pushing her white-blonde hair behind her ears. Then she casually stepped out from behind the statue and leaned cooly against the wall. Severus followed suit and leaned next to her. She held her hand up to her face, pretending to examine her nails.

"Why, Narcissa."

She barely looked up. "Yes?" Severus knew how her insides were reeling and she would squeal and scream about this later.

Lucious, however, was unfazed. "I just thought I'd comment on how… intriguing you look today." He smirked deeply and Severus saw Narcissa's guard falter as her eyes widened and he almost thought she would start squealing on the spot.

But instead, she swallowed, her eyes returning to search for imperfections in her cuticles.

"Intriguing, Lucious? Really?" she drawled, in a tone that implied pure carelessness.

"Yes. Really."

She shrugged fluidly. Lucious turned to Severus. "She's one to keep your eye on, that one," he said in a low knowing tone. Then he smirked deeply, fixing Severus with his cold gray eyes. "Not that she's the only one around here," it was almost a whisper, and then he winked. And then he was gone, his strides covering the corridor in bounds, his boots echoing off the stone floor.

Severus stared after him, blinking uncertainly. He could not have heard and seen what he thought he had… no. Lucious was after Narcissa, everyone knew that… even if Narcissa failed to accept it sometimes. Speaking of Narcissa…

She sighed, leaning her head back against the wall. "Really," she said, "sometimes these things are so tiring."
