They circled each other slowly, Rogue's mind going a mile a minute trying to figure out her opponents weakness. When he attacked it was with such grace it was like art. As they advanced and defended themselves against one and other neither warrior noticed as the walls of stone shifted allowing the entry of Storm, Bishop, Thunder Bird, Psylocke, Beast, and Gambit. Each face a perfect mask of surprise, and confusion then turning to a look of horror as Vargas got the upper hand on Rogue.
The Guardia Civil had slowly arisen and began to watch the fight with eager anticipation and dread, with Diego Sandoval and Maria Cortes at the head. Finally one of the X-Men snapped out of their deadly trance they all seemed to be caught up in. In one fluid motion Gambit threw a dazzling card straight at Vargas, but not before he had managed to bury his sharp sword in her abdomen. Gambit ran to his lover's side as the Guardia Civil and the X-Men encircled him.
As Gambit cradled Rogue's head he shook her softly as if to wake her as he called "Chere." He quickly tore off the glove on one of her hands and placed it gently on his cheek.
Maria's angrily brushed away tears that began to fall from her eyes. Diego closed his eyes briefly; Thunder Bird held Psylocke in his arms as she silently trembled with sadness from knowing the loss of a friend. Bishop laid a firm hand on Gambits shoulder, even Storm had to bit her lip to keep from shedding the tears that had formed in her eyes.
All this took place as Gambit shook silently. "No petite. This river rat needs you." Remy placed his lips on her forehead in one last attempted to arouse her.
As he kissed her with all the tenderness in him he heard Beast say sorrowfully "Gambit, if her power isn't working I'm afraid…" He didn't get a chance to finish. Suddenly Remy's face grew tight and pale. The veins in his body became very clear as his eyes widened.
Then a miracle happened Rogue's chest rose swiftly as her lungs and heart filled with life. Gambit's body began to shake.
"What's happening!?" Maria exclaimed as she reached for the girl.
"Don't touch her!" Stormed warned as she quickly grabbed the Cajun from Rogue's grasp.
Rogue's eyes quickly opened as she called "Remy!" then lapsed back into unconsciousness. Beast checked both of them as Diego called for paramedics.
" They're both alive but I think Remy is in a coma." "What did she do to him?" Diego asked incredulously.
"Rogue has the amazing ability to absorb people's life forces into herself," Explained Bishop, "Resulting in her taking there psych and cases with mutants she 'borrows' their powers for a while."
"If she held on long enough she could kill a person, that's what Gambit was attempting to do, he hoped that if their bare skin touched she would take his life and be revived." Added Storm.
Maria and Diego listened stunned as they watched the Emt's wheel the two away. Maria made a quick decision for Spain and everyone's future as she said without hesitation.
"What can we do to help?"
