Author's Note: This is a short story that just came to me. Sorry if Jack isn't in character. I haven't watched much Torchwood.
She sat there at the bar drumming her fingers against the counter and absent minded sipped her drink. Cardiff was nice, Cardiff was … quiet. Despite all the recent odd happenings, nothing was going on. Jenny liked the quiet and peace there, and she sometimes needed it.
"Is this seat taken?" someone asked.
Jenny started. She hadn't realized how far out she was. The person asking was a tall, dark-haired, blue-eyed American, going by his accent. Oddly enough, he was wearing a big WW2 era coat.
"No, actually. What's your name?" she replied.
"Captain Jack Harkness. What's yours?" He said as he sat down.
She smiled. "Jenny."
"Hello Jenny. Nice to meet you. What brings you to Cardiff?" He asked grinning.
"Not the sights, certainly. I am actually looking for someone. A doctor. "
"Well, isn't that interesting. I am too." He grinned an easy grin.
"I thought he might come here, you know," she downed her drink.
"Tell me, Jenny, are all aliens as pretty as you?"
Jenny nearly choked on her drink as she began to cough violently.
Jack looked at her. "Bad cough you have there."
"How did..." her voice trailed off, the question obvious.
"Did I know?" Jack finished the sentence. "It is obvious, to me. Your Vortex Manipulator is a big give away, though." Jack leaned slightly closer. "You are looking for the Doctor, aren't you?"
"Doctor? Doctor who?" Jenny said as she tried to take a nonchalant sip of her drink.
Jack leaned back, and smiled broadly. "You are."
"Why are you?" she asked.
"I used to travel with him." Jack noted the excitement and interest that slid across Jenny's face before she hid it. "We were fighting the Daleks, I died, and now I can't die. I am looking for him so he can fix it."
Jenny pondered this. Jack didn't seem too bad. He apparently was a friend of the Doctor, and she had been searching the universe a long time trying to find him. It would be nice to have a friend, and Capt. Jack seemed trustworthy.
She drew a deep breath.
"I am kind of his, well, daughter. He put his hand in a Progenitor machine, and it created me. Then we stopped a war and he thought I died. So he left. I didn't though. Now I am trying to find him." The words came out in a rush. She gazed at Jack, trying to gauge his reaction.
"A Progenitor, huh? That must have hurt. So you're kinda like his clone. Are you a Timelord?" He asked curiously.
"Yeah."
"Wow.'

They left the bar, not completely at ease with each other.
"I work for an organization called Torchwood," Jack said. "We deal with any aliens that come here, and we deal with the Rift."
"The Rift? Why are you telling me this?" Jenny asked ever so slightly suspicious.
"Because we need more people. The job is not the most desirable, with the threat of constant death and all."
She faced him. "Are you offering me a job?"
Jack nodded.
"Why should I accept?"
Jack grinned. "Awful hours, bad pay, chance of death, and adventure. But also because the Doctor will return here, one day. I'm just waiting for him."
His voice grew serious. "Will you join?"
Jenny considered. Adventure, she could get that anywhere. But where would she find a place that the Doctor would definitely return to?
Jenny grinned. "Thanks for the job. When do I start?"
Jack returned the smile. "Immediately."
"Lead the way, boss."
