Schism

By Chyna Rose

Disclaimer: I don't own Digimon. The idea came to me while walking to my car after my psych class. What can I say, my personal favorite Freudian defense mechanism is transference, and my favorite transfer recipients are the ones in my fics, and I have a pretty good sadistic streak. Also, I would like to thank Tool and KROCK (long story) for the title which Tool owns, although I have a copy of the song in my CD collection.

"Hey Kenny-boy. Whatcha up to?"

"N…n…nothing."

"Kenny, what have I told you about lying?"

"That it's not nice to do."

"And then what do you go and do? You've been a bad boy Kenny. And bad boys need to be disciplined."

"Osamu. Please. Don't."

"I'm your brother Kenny. It's up to me to teach you things like right from wrong. Now, I don't enjoy doing this, but it has to be done."

"Osamu…"

"Osamu…" the boy known as the Digimon Kaiser, or Ken Ichijouji depending on whom you talked to, awoke in a sweat. He looked around wildly even as he drew his slight body into a seated fetal position on the somewhat palatial bed. His hands were firmly latched over his ears, and tears were streaming unbidden from his eyes.

Wormmon hovered in the doorway connecting the lavish bedroom with the rest of the base. He wanted to rush over to his partner and friend (if only in the small viral's mind) and comfort him, but he knew from experience that that wouldn't make matters better for the boy, and only worse from himself. Still, it hurt that he could do nothing but watch as the child wept over the nightmare that maybe was a dream or a memory.

"Why won't it go away? Why won't he just go away? I just want them to go away!" Ken sobbed to himself. Just as he had all those years ago, he wasn't expecting anyone to hear him.  And just as he had then, he didn't realize that someone in fact did hear his frantic plea. And that someone acted upon his unplanned wish. Neither Wormmon nor Ken/Kaiser noticed when the base briefly dimmed in a flash of black light. Each was too caught up in their pain. And if they had… Well, it wasn't as if the base didn't run into the occasional temporary power failure.
